The fall uniform has a new name, and it sounds like a dare. Leathermaxxing is the latest member of the TikTok-born -maxxing family, the same branch of internet slang that gave us sleepmaxxing and looksmaxxing. This one belongs to fashion. Instead of treating a leather jacket as the safe finishing touch, the look layers the material on in multiples, building outfits almost entirely out of hide. The idea, according to Bustle, which named the trend, is simple: more is more. One leather piece is an outfit accent. Three is a statement.
The leathermaxxing silhouette works because the texture does all the talking. Pants, skirts, blazers, boots, and bags arrive in the same finish, so the surface becomes the print. Nothing else has to compete. That is why the styling rule behind it matters as much as the clothes. Stay monochrome, and the excess reads as sleek. Scatter it, and the outfit tips into clutter. It is that simple discipline, repeated across every piece, that separates leathermaxxing from just owning a lot of leather.
Zendaya wrote the blueprint
Zendaya gets credit for the current blueprint. At a fan event in Berlin for Spider-Man: Brand New Day in June, she wore a custom black Louis Vuitton two-piece built entirely from leather: a cropped vest up top and an ultra-low-rise, floor-length skirt with a sweeping train below. She finished it with blue spiderweb earrings and a matching ring by Lydia Courteille, a nod to the universe of the film. The look was styled by her longtime collaborator Law Roach, as reported by JustJared, who has turned nearly every stop of her press tours into a fashion event in its own right. As reported by People, the set came with shimmery blue spiderweb earrings and a matching statement ring from Lydia Courteille, a wink at the Spider-Man universe.
She returned to the material a month later, in a different register. After a run of Grecian goddess-inspired looks on The Odyssey press tour, Zendaya pivoted to a boxy, oversized black leather blazer with sharp, structured shoulders, left unbuttoned over a sliver of white tank. Low-waisted cigarette pants bunched and puddled at the ankle, with pointed-toe pumps cut from the same leather. Bustle, which tracked the evolution, read it as the full leathermaxxing reignition: leather worn as the whole outfit.
The front row followed
London Fashion Week supplied the next two case studies, both at the Burberry show. Gemma Chan gave the material a utilitarian spin: a stark black boiler suit with functional pockets and a cinched belt, paired with chunky ankle boots and a crescent-shaped bag. Nara Smith went the opposite direction, feminine and preppy, tucking a leather button-up shirt into a pleated midi skirt and finishing with pointed pumps, a matching bag, and a slicked-back bun. The same material produced two completely different moods, and that range is part of the appeal of leathermaxxing.
Why it is landing now
The timing is not accidental. the annual Pinterest trend report named 80s-luxury maximalism one of its defining directions for this year, predicting chunkier belts, sculpted shoulders, and a general appetite for decadence. Adweek reported on the forecast as part of a broader swing toward fashion as self-expression. Leathermaxxing is the wearable version of that prediction. Leather has the weight and sheen to carry an entire outfit without needing color or pattern to do the work, and it scratches the maximalist itch at a moment when quiet luxury is losing its grip. The same appetite is surfacing across the fall aesthetic calendar, from surrealist runway experiments to the tiny vintage watches Gen Z is wearing instead of smartwatches.
The practical version is less about buying a whole new closet and more about stacking what exists. The rule of thumb, according to Bustle, is monochrome first: black reads sharpest, burgundy reads expensive, animal print reads bold. As long as the finish stays seamless from top to toe, the outfit holds together and the swagger does the rest. Keep the finish consistent from top to toe and the look stays coherent. Start with two leather pieces and build from there; the third layer is where leathermaxxing earns its suffix. That is also the point where the fit stops looking like a collection of clothes and starts looking like a decision.
Whether the word survives the season is another question. Internet suffixes burn out fast. The habit underneath it looks more durable. Leather photographs well, ages well, and flatters almost every silhouette, which is why it keeps returning every few years in a new costume. The costume this fall just happens to be the whole outfit.
