The Kagurabachi anime has added another veteran to its cast. Yuichi Nakamura will voice Soshiro Azami, CyberAgent announced on October 2, unveiling a new character visual, a character trailer, and comments from Nakamura alongside the news. The casting lands half a year out from the series' spring 2027 premiere, and it is the latest in a steady drumbeat of reveals around Takeru Hokazono's sword-action manga adaptation.
Azami is a sorcerer affiliated with the Kamunabi, and one of the few people who knows of Chihiro's existence, which had been kept secret. According to the announcement, his extraordinary physical strength lets him overwhelm opponents with devastating blows, making him one of the Kamunabi's most formidable members. Manga readers will know him as the serious, grounded type: a realist who keeps his distance even when he cares, and one of the more anticipated figures in the Kagurabachi anime.
Nakamura on joining the Kagurabachi anime
Nakamura came to the role as a fan of the source material. He said in comments shared with the announcement that he read the manga while auditioning for the role and felt it embodied the recent "spirit of Jump," adding that he could not stop reading and finished every released volume. "I'm incredibly excited to see all those memorable scenes brought to life in the anime," he said.
He described Azami as serious with a dry demeanor, and said he paid attention to how the character balances against the rest of the cast. Nakamura called the character a realist in contrast to the romanticist Shiba: compassionate, yet slightly detached, with an appeal that would become clearer as the story unfolds. Asked to describe the series in a single phrase, Nakamura answered with one word: "Incandescent!"
A revenge tale built on blades
The Kagurabachi anime follows Chihiro Rokuhira, a boy who trained daily to become a swordsmith under his father Kunishige, a craftsman of some renown. An attack by the Hishaku, a mysterious organization of sorcerers, shatters their life together and steals the six Enchanted Blades, swords powerful enough to shape the fate of the nation. Chihiro takes up Enten, the seventh Enchanted Blade his father left behind, and sets out on a blood-soaked path of revenge. The official materials bill the project as Weekly Shonen Jump's neo-Japanese sword action series, built around its sword-fight sequences: the set pieces the Kagurabachi anime will ultimately be judged on.
The manga, written and illustrated by Takeru Hokazono and serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump, has passed four point five million copies in cumulative circulation including digital editions. English readers can find it on MANGA Plus by Shueisha, with print and digital editions published by Viz Media. Part of what makes the property interesting is its origin story: Kagurabachi started as an ironic internet meme before readers' genuine enthusiasm made it one of the magazine's fastest-rising series, a trajectory chronicled by outlets like JapanTalkback.
The team behind the adaptation
The Kagurabachi anime is produced by Cypic, the CyberAgent group animation studio whose credits include Umamusume: Cinderella Gray and The Summer Hikaru Died. The creative team has director Tetsuya Takeuchi, the action animation director from Sword Art Online II who handled battle-scene storyboards and episode direction on Heavenly Delusion, and character designer Keigo Sasaki, known for Blue Exorcist and The Seven Deadly Sins. Shochiku and CyberAgent lead the Kagurabachi anime's production committee. The previously announced cast includes Taihi Kimura, winner of the Best New Actor award at the 2025 Seiyu Awards, as protagonist Chihiro Rokuhira, alongside Tomokazu Seki as Kunishige Rokuhira, Katsuyuki Konishi as Togo Shiba, Miku Ito as Hinao, and Miyari Nemoto as Char Kyonagi.
The series is set to begin broadcasting in April 2027 with an aggressively global rollout. Animation Magazine reported that Crunchyroll will stream it worldwide, excluding Japan, mainland China, North Korea and South Korea, with MUSE and SMG Holdings covering other territories. The production launched an Anime World Tour over the summer, screening the opening twenty minutes of the first episode at conventions including Anime Expo, Japan Expo, Otakon and Anime NYC, ahead of a full premiere event in Japan. That kind of advance tour is unusual for a television series and speaks to the resources CyberAgent is putting behind it.
The road to April 2027
The Kagurabachi anime enters a busy season with real advantages: a studio with a reputation for quality, a director with a battle-choreography background, and a voice cast that now includes one of the industry's most recognizable actors. Each casting reveal since the anime's confirmation earlier this year has raised the bar a little higher. With the spring 2027 schedule taking shape, this is shaping up to be one of the adaptations to watch alongside the season's other heavy hitters. If you want a sense of what the fall season looks like right now, the site's fall 2026 anime watchlist is a decent preview of how packed these slates have become. The project also continues a run of major manga-to-screen news this year, from the Solo Leveling film announcement to the Cyberpunk Edgerunners sequel. You can watch the new Azami character trailer on the official Kagurabachi YouTube channel; the full casting announcement is reprinted on Morningstar's page.
