Night City is not a kind place to live, and Studio Trigger has no plans to soften it. With the Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 release date locked for October 20, 2026 on Netflix, the standalone sequel to one of the most gutting anime of the decade is almost here.

Announced at Anime Expo 2025 and confirmed with a new trailer at Anime NYC, the 10-episode series reunites CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger. This is not a direct continuation, though. According to CD Projekt Red's own announcement, "David is dead. But Night City lives on." Instead of revisiting David Martinez, the show follows an all-new cast in the same grimy corner of the Cyberpunk universe, as reported by Kotaku.

Meet the new crew of Night City

Leading the lineup is Roman Carax, a young cinephile obsessed with analog media who films the horrors of Night City on his camera. Much of the story plays out through his lens as he records his crew's downward spiral. Then there is Talia Yang, raised in the corpo towers but shaped by Maelstrom culture; D, a Snake Nation netrunner out for revenge after his clan is killed; and Weak "King" Kingsley, a veteran edgerunner voiced by Clancy Brown who used to go by just "King" and now lives in the shadow of that reputation, sliding toward cyberpsychosis.

The official synopsis calls the season "a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge," and asks: "when the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?" The trailer leans into that promise with an Arasaka building bombing, hints of Blackwall AI, and a line that already blew up in the comments: "you're a weapon, a weapon made out of people." The trailer has pulled more than 2.3 million views since its August 21 debut, and fans spent hours freeze-framing background details for clues. According to ComingSoon.net.

Behind the camera, the credits run deep. Kai Ikarashi directs, making his directorial debut after impressing showrunner Bartosz Sztybor with his work on the original series' sixth episode, "Girl on Fire." Sztybor pitched the sequel with 90s films like Pulp Fiction and Léon: The Professional in mind, and the character designs draw on 90s comics, giving the season its own look. Masahiko Otsuka returns on writing, Ichigo Kanno handles character design, and the soundtrack lands real names: the opening theme is "10:15 Saturday Night" by The Cure, with "Watson" by Petite Meller closing each episode. The pedigree matters because the bar is high: the original Edgerunners won Anime of the Year at the 2023 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, a fact fans still cite whenever anyone questions whether the sequel can measure up. For Netflix, the Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 release also continues a clear strategy of betting big on anime originals and game adaptations, and the first season remains the proof that the bet pays off.

Why fall 2026 is stacked for anime fans

The Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 release lands in one of the most loaded fall anime seasons in years. Crunchyroll's fall lineup kicked off September 26, and October brings The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 on October 2, Black Clover Season 2 on October 3, a fresh Magic Knight Rayearth on October 7, and Firefly Wedding on October 9, according to Animation Magazine. Summer held its own too, with Science Saru's Ghost in the Shell adaptation and Part 4 of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War.

Edgerunners 2 carries something most fall premieres cannot: cultural gravity. The 2022 original did not only succeed as a show, it revived Cyberpunk 2077 itself, sending players flooding back into Night City. Early reactions to the first episode, screened at Anime Expo 2026, called it "very special," and the team aimed for a more grounded, character-driven story this time. Sztybor has said the anthology approach lets each story stand on its own terms, so newcomers need no homework before October 20. The shorthand from the creatives: if season one was a Michael Bay movie, season two goes for Scorsese.

New viewers can jump straight in, since the anthology format stands on its own. But Trigger does not do happy endings in Night City. The Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 release hits Netflix on October 20, right in the middle of a season where One Piece Season 2 just pulled 16.8 million views. Clear your evening, keep the lights low, and remember the rule from 2022: do not get attached. You will anyway.
