Anime movies almost always open in Japan first, with Western fans waiting months for their turn. GROTESQQQUE flips that script. The original anime film from director Atsushi Nishigori and CloverWorks will premiere in the United States on October 8, 2026, at a special screening in New York City, nearly a month before its Japanese theatrical opening on November 6, 2026, according to Hypebeast.
The American premiere takes place at Japan Society in New York City, presented in collaboration with CloverWorks and Aniplex of America. Nishigori will introduce the film in person, giving American audiences the first look at a project he has been building since 2020. The event is a one-night affair, and no wider United States theatrical rollout has been announced yet.
GROTESQQQUE is an omnibus film, meaning it bundles several complete stories into a single feature instead of telling one continuous narrative. The movie runs 104 minutes and packs in three chapters with sharply different visual styles: an alien comedy, a battle royale set in a world where morning never comes, and a vampire tale unfolding after humanity has vanished, as described in Polygon's interview with the director.
Three Stories, Three Visual Styles
Each chapter looks like its own film. The first short, titled Æliens, is an alien comedy directed by Nishigori himself, centered on an octopus-like alien girl with a stretchy body and an upbeat personality. The second, 4649 Girl, was directed by Takahiro Miura, known for his work on Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works], and leans into neon-soaked cyberpunk territory with ninja assassins and high-tech weaponry. Nishigori returns to the director's chair for the finale, Nocturne: Nuit Grotesque, a vampire story with a distinctly romantic, girls'-love atmosphere.
Nishigori has said the anthology format came from creative overflow rather than strategy. In an interview with The Natural Aristocrat at Montreal's Fantasia festival, he explained that he had "way too many ideas" for a single movie to hold, "so I decided, why not three?" He began the project in 2020, right after finishing work on the final Evangelion film, and told Polygon he treated the finished piece like a long-form music video, building rhythm through images first and matching music to the visuals afterward.
Why America Is Seeing GROTESQQQUE First
This release pattern is the inverse of the usual anime pipeline. Recent franchise hits like Demon Slayer's Infinity Castle played Japanese theaters first and arrived overseas later, with streaming releases following the better part of a year afterward. GROTESQQQUE, by contrast, is an original work with no manga or existing fanbase to serve, so its distributors appear to be testing the waters with prestige screenings abroad first. Aniplex and JOEN are handling distribution, and the film world-premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal on July 24, 2026, before the American screening was announced.
The strategy mirrors how boutique anime films have increasingly used the festival circuit to build buzz before a domestic run. For United States fans, though, it creates a strange window: the movie will be watchable in New York weeks before it opens in Tokyo. Whether that gap closes quickly depends on whether Aniplex of America announces additional theater dates, which it has not done so far.
What to Know Before the Premiere
The October 8, 2026 screening at Japan Society is currently the only confirmed United States showing, and it includes Nishigori's in-person introduction. Tickets are expected to move through the organization's own box office, and seats for anime events with a director appearance tend to go fast. Fans outside New York should watch Aniplex of America's announcements for any expansion, since the film's Japanese theatrical opening on November 6, 2026 suggests a wider push could follow in either market.
It is also worth knowing the pedigree behind the project. Nishigori served as chief animation director on Evangelion: 3.0+1.0, directed Darling in the Franxx, and designed the characters for Gurren Lagann. CloverWorks, the studio producing the film, is behind hits like Spy x Family and My Dress-Up Darling.
