Smoothie King has a new plan for the sprinkle-coated dessert that has dominated social feeds all year: turn it into something you can drink. The chain announced two limited-time additions, the Smoothie King Dot Cake Protein Smoothie and the Dot Cake Protein Toast, that rework one of 2026's biggest viral food obsessions into protein-forward menu items. Both land at participating locations on October 27, days before Halloween, and stay on the menu only while supplies last.

The smoothie blends bananas with the brand's Slim-N-Trim Blend and carries 13 grams of protein per serving. The toast starts with multigrain bread, adds a choice of chocolate hazelnut or peanut butter spread, and lands at 11-plus grams of protein, which puts the full Smoothie King Dot Cake lineup firmly in protein-snack territory. Both are finished with Supernatural Rainbow Nonpareils Sprinkles, a sprinkle made without artificial colors that supplies the signature crunch while fitting Smoothie King's clean-blends ingredient standards. Parade, covering the launch, noted that both items arrive at participating locations across the country and are positioned as a protein-packed twist on the sprinkle-covered dessert. The move mirrors other recent protein plays, such as the protein-packed snack crackdown that has brands chasing high-protein versions of comfort foods.

Lori Primavera, Smoothie King's vice president of R&D and product marketing, said the Smoothie King Dot Cake release was built to catch a food moment without asking shoppers to abandon their nutrition goals. In the company's announcement, she described the dot cake craze as the ideal chance to take something colorful and craveable and rebuild it around protein, calling the project "a uniquely Smoothie King spin" on the viral dessert. According to the announcement, the Smoothie King Dot Cake items were developed for customers who want to enjoy the viral trend while keeping sight of their protein targets.

The dessert behind the hype

The original dot cake came from The Dotcakes, a small bakery in Roslyn, New York, run by a mother and daughter. Each 8-ounce cup layers cake and frosting under a dense coat of nonpareil sprinkles, and the bakery has said the cup design began as a practical fix for carrying cakes around, not as bait for social media.

Starting in May, creators began posting videos of spoons scraping across the crackly topping, and within months the format went from a local bakery item to a national obsession. At the peak of the frenzy, the bakery drew lines around the block, and some cups now carry intricate sprinkle designs such as hearts or smiley faces. The cups are also sold at Butterfield Market, a gourmet grocer with two New York City locations, which helped spread the bakery's name before the TikTok surge carried the look far beyond the original shop.

The trend has already outgrown its bakery origins. This month Costco began carrying six-count variety boxes of mini Dotcakes at select warehouses, with three chocolate and three vanilla cups in each box, sold in the refrigerated sweets section rather than the bakery, according to Tasting Table. The Smoothie King Dot Cake launch pushes the trend further from the bakery case than any retailer has, turning it into a breakfast-adjacent snack and a drink instead of another cake.

Smoothie King has been leaning into limited-time protein releases for a while. The chain was founded in Dallas in 1973 and now runs more than 1,200 stores across the country, and its recent lineup has included a GLP-1 Support Menu introduced in 2024 plus a string of high-protein seasonal smoothies. Seasonal limited-time drops have become a habit across the industry, from limited-time holiday drinks to birthday-cake fast-food mashups. The dot cake items fit that strategy, pairing a trend-driven hook with the chain's protein-heavy positioning to give regulars a reason to walk in before the seasonal menu rotates. The company says its mission is to inspire people to live a healthy and active lifestyle, and the dot cake items are its latest attempt to dress that goal in seasonal packaging.

How to get one

Both Smoothie King Dot Cake items roll out at participating Smoothie King locations on the launch date, sold in limited quantities and only while supplies last, so some stores could run through them before the window closes. The company says the smoothie and toast can be ordered on their own or paired for the full dot cake-inspired experience, and it points guests to smoothieking.com for details. Timed for the Halloween weekend under the banner of "no tricks, just treats," the drop gives the season's dessert hype a protein-heavy middle ground.
