Roblox is about to make you prove your age before you can talk to anyone on the platform. The company is expanding its Roblox Age Checks to every user, requiring a face scan or ID verification to unlock chat, and enforcement starts in December in select markets before going worldwide in January. Roblox says it will be the first major gaming or communication platform to gate chat behind age verification, a move aimed at keeping adults and kids from mixing in the same conversations.

The rollout works in two stages. Right now, any user can voluntarily complete the age estimation process inside the app. During the first week of December, the requirement becomes mandatory in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, and it extends to the rest of the world wherever chat is available in early January. According to the company's announcement, the goal is to set a new industry standard for how platforms handle age on mixed-audience services.

How the new age-based chat works

After completing the check, each user lands in one of six age groups: under nine, nine to twelve, thirteen to fifteen, sixteen to seventeen, eighteen to twenty, or twenty-one and older. Chat is then limited to your own group and the ones next to it. A twelve-year-old, for example, can chat with users up to fifteen but is walled off from anyone sixteen or older. An eighteen-year-old can talk with users sixteen and up and can add a younger sibling as a trusted connection, as long as that sibling is at least thirteen.

The youngest players get the strictest defaults. Chat inside experiences is switched off entirely for users under nine unless a parent gives consent after the age check, and chat outside of experiences stays restricted for everyone under thirteen. Completing the check itself takes a few minutes: grant the app camera permission, center your face on screen, and turn your head left and right while the software estimates your age. Users can also verify with a government-issued photo ID instead, which is the fallback if the face scan gets the age wrong. As the platform's own help guide notes, parents can correct a child's birthday through linked parental controls after the facial estimation runs.

Why Roblox is doing this now

The expansion did not arrive out of nowhere. Since the start of last year, Roblox has introduced more than one hundred and forty-five safety initiatives, including real-time AI monitoring of text and voice chat backed by thousands of human reviewers, default restrictions for under-thirteen accounts, and limits on mature content. In September, the company first announced its plan for age-based chat. This month it also launched a dedicated Safety Center for parents and caregivers, a resource hub with guides for setting up controls and understanding the new settings.

Legal pressure forms the other half of the backdrop. Oklahoma became at least the tenth state to sue the platform over child safety earlier this year, with the attorney general accusing Roblox of marketing itself as safe for children while predators exploited minors on it. Earlier cases ended in settlements with Alabama, Nevada, and West Virginia totaling tens of millions of dollars. Every one of those lawsuits effectively demanded the same fix: stronger age and identity verification. "Every day, we work to provide over one hundred and fifty million users with a safe, positive, age-appropriate experience on Roblox," chief safety officer Matt Kaufman said in the announcement. "By requiring facial age checks to access chat features, we're helping create an age-appropriate environment for every user, and we encourage the broader industry to adopt similar standards."

The privacy trade-off nobody can dodge

Scanning a teenager's face to let them chat is a genuine trade-off, and the critics are loud. The facial estimation is processed by Persona, a third-party identity vendor, and Roblox says the images and video are deleted immediately after processing. Its facial media notice adds that the company itself never receives a copy of the biometric data and that data kept for verification is scheduled for deletion within thirty days unless the law requires longer retention. Privacy advocates quoted in the announcement called the approach privacy protective, with one saying it strengthens protections for younger players while respecting user rights.

But the irony has not gone unnoticed. As one analysis of the Oklahoma lawsuit put it, legal actions meant to protect children from surveillance now effectively mandate biometric checks for a user base that large, since about half of the platform's users had already completed verification earlier in the year. Civil-liberties watchers warn that age-gating laws are pushing every family toward face scans and ID uploads as the default price of going online. Families weighing the decision have to balance two real risks: the documented danger of unmonitored contact between minors and adults in open chat, against handing biometric data to a vendor pipeline that most players will never inspect. There is no version of this where everyone is comfortable, which is exactly why the debate matters.

What it means for players right now

For the average player, the immediate step is simple: the Roblox Age Checks rollout is currently optional, but chat disappears without it once enforcement hits your region. Getting misclassified is a known hiccup, so if the scan drops you into the wrong bracket and you are thirteen or older, the ID verification route can correct it. Parents of younger kids get the linked-account path to fix a birthday or set the chat ceiling lower than the defaults allow.

The bigger question is whether the rest of the industry follows. Roblox is betting that mandatory age-gated chat becomes the norm for mixed-age platforms rather than a one-company experiment. If rivals adopt similar checks, the era of anonymous open chat in mainstream games may be ending; if they do not, Roblox will have traded some friction for a safety lead it can point to in every courtroom and hearing. Either way, the face scan is no longer a niche feature. It is becoming the ticket to talk.
