Rockstar Games picked a Thursday morning to end the silence. With no announcement and no countdown, the studio published the official launch trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI across its social channels. It is the last new footage fans will see before the game reaches stores, and the launch trailer arrives a little over a month ahead of release day.

It starts quietly. Jason explains, in voiceover, that he got into trouble in the Army and left on rough terms, the kind of record that means nobody will give him a loan. He is working a dead-end job at a marina when the phone rings. It is Lucia, calling collect from prison, and the whole story snaps into motion from that call.

What the footage actually shows

From there the launch trailer moves fast. Police chases tear through the neon streets of Vice City, a helicopter hauls an entire bank vault through the sky, and Lucia grabs the landing gear of a moving airplane. There are also slower beats: the two of them sharing a shower, kissing in a bathroom, and a quiet moment where Lucia asks whether they are going to be okay. Jason tells her they just need to get through it.

One detail is doing a lot of work. Lucia is still wearing an ankle monitor, which lines up with her official backstory of coming straight out of Leonida Penitentiary. That makes every heist in the footage riskier than it looks. ComicBasics described the whole launch trailer as very Thelma-and-Louise-inspired, and the Bonnie-and-Clyde framing has followed the game since the first reveal.

The footage was captured entirely on a base PlayStation 5, not the Pro model, according to RockstarINTEL, which is the kind of technical flex the studio enjoys dropping right before launch. The game is confirmed for Sony and Microsoft's current consoles on November nineteenth, with a PC version expected early next year.

The song is a debut, not a borrowed hit

Rockstar used the launch trailer to debut new music. The track is called Flower in a Hurricane, by French electronic duo Justice, with Tame Impala, SZA, and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard along for the ride. Justice also composed the game's original score, so this is a house band moment rather than a borrowed hit. The song will appear on Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, which is already up for pre-save on streaming services.

That choice continues a pattern. The first trailer rode on Tom Petty's Love Is a Long Road, the second on the Pointer Sisters' Hot Together, and each song became part of the game's identity before anyone played it. Rockstar's trailers are watched like film releases at this point, and the studio knows it.

The long road to this video

The wait behind this launch trailer has been genuinely absurd. Rockstar revealed the game in December twenty twenty-three, then delayed it twice, first from fall of twenty twenty-five to May, then back another six months to the current date. Grand Theft Auto V came out in September twenty thirteen, so this release lands more than thirteen years later. Every leak and screenshot in between got picked apart frame by frame.

There are also fresh mechanics tucked into the coverage around the launch trailer. In an interview with Dazed, Rockstar said players can switch between Jason and Lucia in the middle of a mission, so you can drive as Jason and then jump to Lucia in the passenger seat when a chase turns into a shootout. Their bodies also change with habits: overeat and the character gains weight, hit the gym and they build muscle. It is the kind of detail that sounds small and will fuel a thousand reaction videos on its own.

The launch trailer is barely longer than a song, and it still gave the internet a full day of frame-by-frame breakdowns before lunch. RockstarINTEL confirmed the release date and the all-PS5 capture, while Polygon walked through the trailer's steamier moments and story hints. Thirty-five days is nothing in the scheme of this wait. Vice City is back, and the countdown is the shortest it has ever been.
