Privacy coins just had a major mainstream moment. Zcash has climbed more than 30% in seven days to trade above $1,500, after 21Shares launched Europe's first regulated Zcash ETP on Tuesday.
The new listing on Euronext Paris and Amsterdam gives European investors a way to buy ZEC exposure through an ordinary brokerage account. It arrives weeks after Grayscale introduced a U.S.-listed Zcash ETF, and traders piled into the token ahead of both launches.
Zcash was not alone. Uniswap jumped about 18% in a single day, and the two tokens were the best-performing large altcoins on Wednesday, according to Stocktwits. Bitcoin, in contrast, stayed flat near $86,000.
A regulated wrapper for privacy coins
The 21Shares Zcash ETP trades under the ticker ZCASH and carries a 2.5% annual fee. It is physically backed, meaning the issuer holds actual ZEC in custody rather than tracking the price with derivatives. A companion product tied to ether.fi's ETHFI token listed on the same day. Like that fund, the new Zcash ETP is physically backed by real tokens held in custody.
The listing matters because privacy coins have mostly lived outside regulated investing. Zcash offers optional private transactions, a feature that has made exchanges cautious and kept the coin out of many funds. A brokerage-listed wrapper changes the calculation, since investors can now get ZEC exposure without a crypto exchange account or a private key to manage. For this Zcash ETP, the trade-off is the 2.5% annual fee.
Both products are quoted in euros in Paris and U.S. dollars in Amsterdam. Day-two assets were modest, around $100,000 each with 5,000 securities outstanding, which is typical for brand-new listings. The issuer's product pages list September 21 as the inception date for both securities, according to crypto.news.
21Shares says the privacy-coin sector grew from about $6.2 billion to roughly $30 billion in market value over the past year, and put Zcash's own value near $20 billion at the time. In a statement, the firm's director of financial product development said European investors want straightforward access to projects building useful technology, and described Zcash as distinct for pairing a capped supply like bitcoin's with optional privacy.
The fee is the catch. At 2.5% a year it runs well above what most European Bitcoin funds charge, so the Zcash ETP's staying power depends on whether investors accept the premium for regulated privacy-coin access. The product arrived in a week of turnover across the industry: BitMEX, the derivatives exchange that invented the perpetual swap, ended trading this week after 11 years.
Grayscale's Zcash ETF, the U.S. counterpart to the new Zcash ETP, already has one committed backer. Digital Currency Group invested about $100 million in its Zcash ETF on September 8, the companies announced. DCG is Grayscale's parent company. 21Shares operates as a subsidiary of FalconX, the digital asset prime broker, according to edgen.tech.
Uniswap rides Robinhood Chain growth
Uniswap's rally has a different engine. Trading activity on Robinhood Chain has been picking up, and Uniswap handles most of the swaps there, Stocktwits reported. The protocol collects fees from that volume, so busier chain traffic shows up directly in demand for UNI.
The derivatives numbers were loud on Wednesday. UNI futures open interest sat near $988 million, about 15% of the token's market value, a sign traders were adding leverage. Zcash futures were even busier, with open interest near $2.97 billion and 24-hour volume around $6.69 billion.
For a token whose value follows usage, the link to a growing retail chain is a meaningful distribution story. Uniswap is positioned to catch the order flow if Robinhood Chain becomes a default route into crypto.
Altcoins are leading again
The wider market tells the same story. Total crypto capitalization pushed back toward $3 trillion this week while bitcoin barely moved. Bitcoin Cash surged more than 30% in a day, and several mid-cap tokens posted double-digit gains, according to a market review from FxPro.
The rotation from bitcoin into smaller coins usually signals a risk-on mood. Money that had been parked in the most liquid asset is hunting for bigger moves, and regulated products are giving it new places to go.
Whether the move holds is an open question. The Zcash ETP gives privacy coins a permanent on-ramp they never had, and if demand for the new Zcash ETP holds, other privacy coins could follow the same path to a listing. and Uniswap's rally will last as long as Robinhood Chain activity keeps growing. For this week at least, the market's biggest stories were not about bitcoin. See more of GenZ NewZ's crypto coverage for the week's other movers.
