Taylor Swift Patient Zero Single and Encore Album Out Friday

Taylor Swift has new music on the way, and she let a countdown clock do the talking. On Tuesday, September 22, fans who visited TaylorSwift.com were greeted by a burgundy curtain covered in glittering letters and a timer set to expire at 2 p.m. ET, according to USA Today. When the clock hit zero, Swift announced that the Taylor Swift Patient Zero single arrives this Friday, September 25. It is her first new music since she married Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce in a star-studded ceremony at Madison Square Garden in July, according to the New Indian Express.

The announcement came with the kind of clue trail her fans live for. Earlier that day, Swift had replaced the letter O with the number zero across her social media bios, a wink at the song's title, Consequence reported. On Instagram, she said she had been waiting impatiently to share the news, punctuating the caption with twelve exclamation points. USA Today noted the single is also getting a physical rollout: three limited CD editions, a standard version plus acoustic and piano renditions, priced at $3.99 each during a 24-hour preorder window. The discs ship on or about October 13. The CD listings on her site carried the logo for The Life of a Showgirl, which USA Today read as a sign the release extends that album rather than opening a brand-new era.

Swift has kept busy between albums. Her last release was a contribution to the Toy Story 5 soundtrack that she co-wrote and produced with Jack Antonoff, according to Consequence. Last week she popped up in a pre-taped Emmys sketch, playing a rookie in the Law and Order: Special Victims Unit office alongside host Mariska Hargitay, according to the New Indian Express. Swift also revealed The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, a deluxe edition of her twelfth studio album that adds four new songs: "Patient Zero," "Pink Clouding," "Babylon," and "Cleveland!" as reported by Entertainment Weekly. She wrote on Instagram that the extra tracks came together in Sweden, where she had traveled to celebrate the original album's record-shattering first week with collaborators Max Martin and Shellback. Swift wrote in the post that the trip was meant for reflection, but with a studio nearby, the collaborators kept writing.

One track already has fans reading between the lines. "Cleveland!" shares its name with Kelce's hometown, and the city has become part of the couple's story since they started spending time near his childhood home of Cleveland Heights, according to PhillyVoice. The whole rollout fits a September packed with music moments, from Céline Dion's barefoot Paris residency surprise to Apple's new London venue built to record every show it hosts.

Sunday could top it

Friday's releases land just before the MTV Video Music Awards, where Swift will receive the inaugural Artist Director Honor on Sunday, September 27, Consequence reported. The award recognizes artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of the music video. She enters the ceremony with nine nominations, second only to Madonna's eleven, and tied with Beyoncé at 30 career wins each, the most in the show's history, according to the New Indian Express. Consequence noted she could even debut "Patient Zero" on the VMAs stage, continuing her habit of turning award shows into announcement venues. Kelce recently shared a few details about the couple's wedding on his "New Heights" podcast, which he co-hosts with his brother, former Eagles center Jason Kelce, according to PhillyVoice.

The Encore edition extends an album that already rewrote the record books. The Life of a Showgirl, which debuted last October, scored the biggest first week for an album in history and broke the record for the most album sales and streams in a single week, according to PhillyVoice.
