Four thousand years ago, someone looked at a 25-tonne slab of rock in the Yorkshire countryside and decided it needed to end up eleven miles away. Then they actually did it.

The Devil's Arrows are three towering stones near Boroughbridge in northern England, the tallest survivors of a prehistoric stone row that once held more of them. The biggest stands about seven meters, or 23 feet, high. They have loomed over that lowland landscape for millennia, and for just as long, archaeologists have argued about where the stones came from.

This month, that argument got settled. A study led by Curtin University in Australia, working with the University of York, traced the Devil's Arrows back to Brimham Rocks, a rugged stretch of North Yorkshire about 18 kilometers from the monument. The surprise is the distance itself, because suitable stone was available much closer to the site. Instead of taking the convenient option, prehistoric builders went out of their way to a harder landscape nearly twice as far away.

Researchers had long assumed the Devil's Arrows came from Plumpton Rocks, a much nearer source of suitable stone. The new analysis says otherwise. That choice tells us something about the people who made it: the stone's origin mattered to them for reasons beyond practicality.

"We found these stones weren't simply taken from the nearest available source, they were deliberately chosen from a challenging landscape 18 kilometers away," said lead author Dr. Anthony Clarke, from the Timescales of Mineral Systems Group in Curtin's School of Earth and Planetary Sciences. "Each stone weighs more than 25 tonnes, so moving them would have required incredible planning, coordination and engineering skill. This tells us prehistoric people placed real importance on the landscape itself. It wasn't just about convenience, the location the stones came from likely held meaning for them."

Tape, mineral grains, and a 4,000-year-old fingerprint

Figuring out where ancient stones come from is delicate work. You cannot exactly take a core sample out of a protected monument without causing damage, so the team tried something gentler: adhesive tape.

The researchers pressed tape against the Devil's Arrows to lift extremely small mineral grains from the surface, a low-impact sampling technique that leaves the stones unharmed. Those grains carried age fingerprints, signatures locked in by the radioactive decay of minerals over geological time, which the team compared against rock from candidate sources. The match pointed to Brimham Rocks, and the same evidence let them rule out the idea that glaciers had carried the stones there naturally. Someone, or rather a lot of someones, moved them on purpose. The stones are thought to have been erected during the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age, possibly around 2000 BC. Picture what that meant: no wheels or cranes, just timber, rope, levers, and the coordinated labor of a whole community dragging blocks heavier than four adult elephants across eighteen kilometers of countryside, then standing them upright. The logistics alone are staggering, and the builders chose this route freely, passing up closer stone to do it the hard way.

"These results show that ancient communities were making deliberate and meaningful choices about where their stones came from," said co-author Dr. Jim Leary from the University of York. "It highlights the importance of landscape and shared belief systems, as well as the remarkable effort involved in transporting and raising stones of this size."

Why Brimham Rocks?

If the place was worth an extra eleven miles of hauling, it must have carried weight in the builders' world. Maybe it was already a sacred landscape, or the striking weather-carved formations there already looked like a place of power. Nobody can say for sure yet, but the finding reframes the monument: the Devil's Arrows look like a deliberate line drawn between two meaningful places, not just an impressive pile of stones.

The National Trust, which cares for Brimham Rocks, sees it the same way. Justin Scully, the Trust's general manager for Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal and Brimham Rocks, said the findings link two beloved Yorkshire landscapes through one ancient human story, and called the discovery a new chapter in the stones' history that deepens understanding of the people who shaped the land thousands of years ago.

What the researchers do next

Dr. Clarke says the team plans to apply the same tape-and-grain technique to other standing stones whose origins are still uncertain. If it works as well elsewhere, a lot of Britain's prehistoric monuments could get their origin stories rewritten. The team also plans targeted excavations at the Devil's Arrows and around Brimham Rocks, which could finally pin down when the stones were moved and exactly how the whole operation worked.

For four thousand years the Devil's Arrows stood watch over Yorkshire while everyone guessed wrong about where they came from.
