MTV VMAs 2026: Swift's History Night and Madonna's Return

Taylor Swift will receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards tonight, a prize that brings her career total to 31 wins and makes her the most awarded artist in VMA history, according to reporting by the Associated Press. The post celebrated the band's legacy without confirming further details, and representatives for Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl have not commented on whether they will attend.

Previous Vanguard recipients include Madonna, Mariah Carey, Katy Perry, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez and U2. Nirvana's videos for 1991's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and 1993's "Heart-Shaped Box" remain among the most studied in the form.

LISA returns to the VMAs stage for the television debut of "SaWaDiKa," reported by Music Times, and holds the most career nominations of any K-pop soloist in the show's history. Shaboozey makes his VMAs performance debut with "Cowgirl," which has passed more than one hundred million official streams, then brings out Gunna for the first broadcast performance of their collaboration "High Noon." GENER8ION and Yung Lean appear for the first time with a world premiere of "Storm II," a set tied to three nominations. Raye, up for song of the year, and best new artist nominee Sienna Spiro are making their VMAs debuts.

Tributes, host and how to watch

Kacey Musgraves will pay tribute to Dolly Parton, who died in Nashville of cancer in August at 80. Raye, Sombr and Teddy Swims will honor George Michael, who died on Christmas Day ten years ago at 53. Raye also performs solo, and the stage lineup includes GENER8ION with Yung Lean, Shaboozey with Gunna, LISA and Sienna Spiro. Presenters include Charli xcx, Tyla, Teyana Taylor and Troye Sivan.

Snoop Dogg hosts. The rapper is a 13-time VMA nominee and three-time winner who first performed on the show in 1994.
