Magic Knight Rayearth Reboot Premieres October 7 With New Trailer

After more than three decades, the Magic Knights are returning to television. The Magic Knight Rayearth reboot will premiere on October 7, 2026, airing at 11:45 p.m. on TV Asahi's "IMAnimation W" block, with the series planned for two consecutive cours. The broadcast details were announced during a stage event at the Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair 2026, where staff also debuted a second promotional video, four new cast members, and both theme songs.

For longtime fans, the news caps a wait that has stretched across generations. The original manga by CLAMP ran in Kodansha's Nakayoshi magazine from November 1993 to February 1995, with a sequel following from March 1995 to March 1996. The first television adaptation aired from 1994 to 1995 and ran for 49 episodes across two seasons, becoming one of the defining shojo fantasies of the decade. This is the franchise's first new TV series in roughly 30 years, and it arrives as the genre Rayearth helped shape, the isekai, dominates seasonal anime lineups worldwide.

The story follows Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji, three middle-school girls who meet by chance on a school trip to Tokyo Tower. They are suddenly pulled into Cephiro, a world kept alive by the prayers of its ruler, Princess Emeraude. With Emeraude taken captive by Lord Zagato, the girls must become the legendary Magic Knights, track down the weaponsmith Presea and the rabbit-like guide Mokona, and revive the Rune Gods before Cephiro collapses.

New cast, new songs

The second promotional video, screened at the Kyoto event, introduced four more performers. According to the production's announcements, Mamiko Noto will voice Alcyone, Ayumu Murase joins as Ascot, Hitomi Ueda plays Caldina, and Hiroki Yasumoto voices Lafarga. They join a main cast revealed earlier this year: Ayane Sakura as Hikaru, Rumi Okubo as Umi, and Rie Takahashi as Fuu, with Saori Hayami as Princess Emeraude, Yuki Ono as Zagato, Mika Kikuchi as Mokona, Yuki Kaji as Clef, Emiri Kato as Presea, and Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Ferio.

Both theme songs got their first previews in the new trailer. Singer-songwriter Toaka, previously heard on Suzume no Tojimari, will perform the opening theme, "Otome no Tsurugi." The ending theme, "Hoshiakari," comes from Yurina Kawaguchi. The trailer pairs snippets of both tracks with new footage, and the remake leans into a modern, cinematic look while keeping CLAMP's intricate character designs recognizable. Given studio E&H's action-heavy track record, fans are hoping the Magic Knight Rayearth reboot will give the Rune God battles the full spectacle treatment the 1990s version never quite reached.

The team behind the remake

Yui Umemoto is directing the series at E&H Production, the studio founded by Jujutsu Kaisen season one director Sunghoo Park, who is attached as creative producer. Takayuki Sano serves as assistant director, Shigeru Murakoshi is handling series composition, and Satomi Watanabe is responsible for character designs. The music is being composed by Yuki Kajiura, Takumi Ozawa, and Shiho Terada. Kajiura's credits include Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Ozawa worked on the Magia Record side story, and Terada contributed to Inazuma Eleven Go.

The Magic Knight Rayearth reboot is planned and produced by UNLIMITED PRODUCE by TMS, with production by TMS Entertainment, Kodansha, and TV Asahi. According to the announcement history, the project was first unveiled in July 2024 as part of the franchise's 30th anniversary, and its world premiere took place at Anime Expo 2026 in Los Angeles, where the first two episodes screened for attendees.

International viewers are covered as well. Crunchyroll has confirmed it will stream the series this fall as part of its seasonal lineup, joining other fall anime releases like the second season of Tougen Anki and Overgeared. The company has also announced an English dub for the new season, though a date for the dubbed version has not yet been set. The show helped define 1990s fantasy anime for a magazine-reading generation; the remake rebuilds it for viewers who may have never touched a copy of Nakayoshi.
