TOHO animation confirmed on Saturday that the anime will end with a theatrical film, Kaiju No. 8: The Final Mission, instead of a third television season, according to Anime News Network. The announcement came at a Defense Force Boot Camp event at Tachikawa Stage Garden in Tokyo, where members of the cast gathered on stage to reveal the finale. The Kaiju finale film is set to open in Japanese theaters in 2027, and no release date outside Japan has been announced yet.
The reveal answers a question fans have been asking since Jump Festa in December 2025, when a conclusion arc was first teased without any word on what form it would take. Anime Corner reported that the Kaiju finale film picks up after the two television seasons and brings the anime story to a close. The film centers on the Defense Force as it faces the kaiju that absorbed Isao Shinomiya, while Kafka Hibino resolves to keep fighting in the form that made him a target of the very force he serves.
The returning team and the first artwork
Shigeyuki Miya returns to direct the Kaiju finale film at Production I.G, Anime News Network reported, and Studio Khara is back to handle creature designs, according to Anime Corner. Keeping the television team intact gives the finale a direct line back to the look and rhythm of the two seasons, which matters for a story that has always leaned on the contrast between large-scale kaiju battles and the daily grind of the people who clean up after them.
Art director Shinji Kimura drew the super teaser visual released with the announcement. It shows a many-eyed kaiju looming over a ruined city, paired with the tagline "The age of humanity ends." The image points at the threat that has been building since the end of the second season, when the kaiju that absorbed Shinomiya vanished after declaring that the age of the kaiju had begun.
Eight voice actors stood on stage for the announcement, including Masaya Fukunishi as Kafka, Asami Seto as Mina Ashiro, Wataru Kato as Reno Ichikawa, Fairouz Ai as Kikoru Shinomiya, Kengo Kawanishi as Soshiro Hoshina, Yuki Shin as Iharu Furuhashi, Koki Uchiyama as Gen Narumi, and Hiroki Yasumoto as Aoi Hasegawa. Fukunishi told the crowd that the story would reach its conclusion with the theatrical film in 2027, Anime Corner reported, and noted that he turns 32 next year, the same age as Kafka. He added that he would give everything he has to the series through its end.
Where the story stands before the finale
The series follows Kafka, a cleanup worker who promised his childhood friend Mina that they would join the Defense Force together. Mina kept that promise and rose to captain, while Kafka spent years clearing away the wreckage left by kaiju attacks. When a rule change made him eligible for the Defense Force again, he tried out once more, carrying a secret that put him on the force's own neutralization list. Crunchyroll describes that setup as the engine of the show, and it has stayed in place through both seasons.
Naoya Matsumoto's manga ran on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ platform from July 2020 and wrapped its run in July last year, compiled into sixteen volumes, with Viz Media publishing the series in English. The first television season aired in 2024 and the second followed the next year, and both stream on Crunchyroll. A compilation film, Mission Recon, paired a recap of the first season with an original episode, and a four-episode short about Gen Narumi arrived as a companion piece to the finale announcement. Anime finales have been a running theme this season, and GenZ NewZ recently covered the final episodes of Bleach beginning to air.
Questions remain about how much story one film can hold. ComicBook noted that the second season ended in the middle of a wave of fights and that a good deal of manga material remains unadapted, which raises the possibility that the Kaiju finale film tells an original story rather than adapting every remaining chapter. Neither an exact release date nor international plans have been announced, so fans tracking other continuations, like the second part of One-Punch Man season three, will have to wait for the next update to learn when the finale reaches theaters outside Japan.
For now, the teaser video and visual are the full extent of what the production has shared. Further details are expected through the series official channels as production continues, and the film will join a 2027 animation calendar that already includes Ghibli's Valley of Witches short running into 2027. The full announcement was covered by Final Weapon and animeMANGA.
