EGOT-winning singer John Legend released Muse on Friday, October 23. The John Legend Pharrell album is a 16-track collection produced in full by Pharrell Williams and released through Republic Records, the first time the two have built an entire record together after more than twenty years of friendship.

The collaboration started at Williams' studio inside the Louis Vuitton headquarters in Paris, where the pair began writing and recording in January 2025, according to Universal Music Canada. They drew on Nina Simone, Nat King Cole and Marvin Gaye while shaping a cinematic sound the release describes as "classic, cinematic elements" with a "modern backbeat". Legend has said the pair were chasing what he called a "Black James Bond" feel.

The idea took hold after Legend appeared on Clipse's "The Birds Don't Sing", which prompted Williams to imagine an entire album built around Legend's voice. Legend told the Associated Press that Pharrell wanted to explore another side of that voice, one that sometimes speaks more than it sings. On several tracks, Legend tones down the piano-ballad power of hits like "All of Me" and "Ordinary People" in favor of a looser, more conversational vocal style, a shift Williams suggested.

A new sound for a veteran voice

Early reviews are positive. Shatter the Standards gave the album a Great rating, four stars out of five, singling out Williams' horns, strings and church organ. Ratings Game Music praised the funky rhythms and unexpected textures in the production, writing that Legend's warmth and emotional clarity tie the record together. The set opens with the title track featuring Williams, and also includes "Pray For Ya", "Daylight", "Her", "Get Back", "Under The Bridge", "Doing Me", "Fireflies" and the closer "Sail Off".

The rollout and the "Bodies On The Floor" video

Muse is the first album on which Williams has produced Legend in full, and it extends a recording catalog that now spans 11 albums released between 2004 and this year, according to Legend's official site. Rather than repeating the piano-ballad formula that made him a household name, the collaborators built the record around a broader range of Black musical traditions and a more conversational vocal style.

"Pray For Ya" served as the first preview, appearing in Louis Vuitton's Autumn-Winter 2026 menswear show. The current single is "Bodies On The Floor", a collaboration with Clipse, accompanied by a black-and-white video directed by Grammy-nominated filmmaker Paul Hunter of PRETTYBIRD. The clip stages the story of two lovers caught in a cycle of hurt and reconciliation, with Legend performing at the piano as the drama unfolds around him. Legend said he wrote the lyric with Samm Henshaw while watching the crime drama MobLand, letting the show's language of gang warfare shape what he described as "a vicious cycle of harm and retaliation". The video arrived on Spotify first, with a YouTube release set for Sunday, October 25, according to La Presse.

Why Legend is still chasing firsts

In a statement released with the album, Legend said he wanted the record to carry "a sense of urgency" and to be fully worthy of his audience's attention. He told the Associated Press he wants every project to feel like his strongest and keeps challenging himself to move forward rather than rely on past success. Speaking on SiriusXM's Bevelations, he said the album sounds like neither of the pair's earlier records and that it "has its own feel", reported by The Source. In the same conversation, he argued that artists should rely on the human creativity technology cannot replace, a position he holds on artificial intelligence in music.

Legend is also composing an original score for Imitation of Life, a musical set to open at New York's The Shed in December, as he told the AP. Muse is streaming now and is available on CD and vinyl.

The release lands in a packed fall for music and film. Universal Music has been extending its reach beyond traditional records, including a recent bet on adaptive music for gaming, while theaters face one of the busiest October weekends in years.
