Grimes Psy Opera just stopped being a rumor: the artist born Claire Boucher dropped "Accelerando," the first single from her first full-length album in six years, on Friday, October 9. The track arrives a day after a trailer in which she retells the Gospel of John with a twist: "On the first day, God created the large language model."

The single and the story behind it

According to Rolling Stone Canada, "Accelerando" was co-produced by Grimes and her frequent collaborator Vadakin, and it recalls bits of her last full-length, 2020's Miss Anthropocene. Stereogum's Chris DeVille called it "a huge, sweeping, apocalyptic dance track" and said hearing her voice reminded him why she became such a big deal in the first place.

Grimes described the project in a statement: "From the AI debate to immoral wars to a bad ex to looksmaxers to the importance of religion, Psy Opera will cover everything Grimes witnessed as a woman of history during her hiatus from pop music." No release date or full track list has been announced yet, but two titles are known: "The Light Ages" and "Eve Is Online," which appears in the trailer.

An AI album that isn't made with AI

Here's the twist that has people talking. Per Stereogum, the album is a concept record about the potential for human extinction at the hands of AI, yet Grimes says she doesn't use generative AI in her music. She did admit to using Deepseek to come up with lyrics for one song about Deepseek, which is very on-brand chaos.

Her pitch, quoted by Stereogum from an earlier interview: "Why do you automatically assume you're so much lesser? You're literally responsible for creating AI." She argues that people shouldn't hand over their agency just because the technology is powerful, and she even floated the hope that, with good relations, AIs might one day "take our DNA and make more of us."

The sound matters here too. Stereogum was careful to say "Accelerando" isn't Visions or Art Angels quality, but the praise for her voice shows the pull of her early work is still there. For a lot of Gen Z listeners, Grimes is the artist who made bedroom-produced, genre-melting pop feel futuristic long before AI music tools were on every phone, so a return with an AI-themed record feels almost inevitable.

The title may also be a nod to Charles Stross's sci-fi story collection Accelerando, which deals with superintelligence and the technological singularity, as Rolling Stone speculated. That fits a record about extinction, faith and machines. Add the Gospel-of-John trailer and the religion angle in her statement, and Grimes Psy Opera looks like a loud, messy, maximalist swing about what humans are worth in an automated world.

Fans, haters and the 70-person team

The trailer's look drew instant side-eye online, with one user complaining that it looked "gaggy." Grimes fired back on X that the visuals were created by a 70-person team over many months and asked people not to diminish that labor. In other words, the AI-themed trailer was built by humans, and she wants the credit to go to them.

It's a fitting fight for an artist whose music has always sat on the line between tech and art. In 2023, as the generative AI boom started, she gave consent for artists to use her voice in AI songs and promised to split royalties 50/50 on any successful track. Her stance now seems more nuanced: she's fascinated by the tech, but she's insisting on human craft in the finished product.

Why a six-year gap matters

Grimes told Interview in April that she'd "totally quit music a couple of years ago" and planned to be a stay-at-home mom before the album idea pulled her back. In the meantime, she has produced songs for AdΓ©la, collaborated with Sevdaliza and appeared on tracks by Anyma. Rolling Stone also notes she reportedly worked on a documentary about machine consciousness called First Contact.

The comeback lands at the exact moment AI is dominating pop culture arguments, from artist rights to deepfake voices. You can follow more of that in our music coverage and our AI news beat. Whether Grimes Psy Opera becomes a defining AI-era album or just a very loud art project, it's the most interesting pop release question of the month.
