The Connor Bedard season debut finally happened Tuesday night in Chicago, and it landed a whole month ahead of the schedule the Blackhawks gave out this summer. The twenty-one-year-old captain set up a power-play goal and helped Chicago beat the Pittsburgh Penguins five to three at the United Center, according to NHL.com.
For a team that had stumbled out of the gate, it was the best news of the young season. Bedard had missed the first six games while he recovered from left shoulder surgery, and nobody was sure how rusty he would look when he finally stepped on the ice.
A Comeback That Beat the Timeline
Bedard hurt his shoulder during an offseason training session in Vancouver on July second. Surgery followed, and at that point the expected return was November. Instead he was skating on his own from the start of training camp, and he joined his teammates in a noncontact jersey on October fifth.
He took part in his first two full practices on Sunday and Monday, and the club activated him from injured non-roster status ahead of Tuesday's puck drop. That is a seriously fast turnaround for a shoulder repair, and head coach Jeff Blashill made sure to say so.
"Connor put an incredible amount of work to come back as quick as he did," Blashill said, as quoted by NHL.com's game recap. He called it a testament to the captain's desire to play and his commitment to the team.
What He Did on the Ice
Chicago put Bedard right back at first-line center, flanked by rookie winger Roman Kantserov and veteran Patrick Kane. He played just over twenty-one minutes, the most of any Blackhawks forward and fourth overall on the team.
His first point of the year came late in the opening period. Bedard slid a touch pass from the left circle, and Kantserov hammered it home on the power play with a one-timer from the slot. It was the one hundred twenty-ninth assist of Bedard's career, which is the third-most by a Blackhawk before turning twenty-two, trailing only Denis Savard and Kane.
He also got his trademark wrist shot off in the first period and fired a slap shot to open that same power play. He won six of fourteen face-offs, which is solid for a player coming off months away from game speed.
Kane and Kantserov Steal Some of the Spotlight
The night was not only about Bedard. Teuvo Teravainen scored twice, including the game-winner late in the third period, and Kantserov also finished with two goals. Tyler Bertuzzi sealed the win with an empty-netter in the final minute, and goalie Spencer Knight made twenty-four saves.
Kane, meanwhile, picked up his eight hundred ninety-fourth career assist, which ties him with Phil Housley for the most ever by an American-born player. "He looked great. Looked like he was skating well, looked like he was making plays," Kane said of Bedard.
Across the ice, Sidney Crosby scored his first two goals of the season, numbers six hundred fifty-five and six hundred fifty-six of his career, which moved him into a tie with Brendan Shanahan on the all-time list. Pittsburgh still left with a loss, and the game turned into a back-and-forth track meet.
Why This Matters for Chicago
The Blackhawks came in with two wins and five regulation losses, having dropped their previous two games. Bedard has led the team in points in each of his first three NHL seasons, so getting him back this early gives a young group a legitimate star to build around.
Bedard himself kept it simple, telling reporters the return felt good. "It's what I live for," he said, adding that he missed the camaraderie and the energy in the building. He also admitted the line can still clean up a few turnovers, and he called Kantserov "unbelievable" and Kane someone who needs no introduction.
The Associated Press noted that it took all of one game for Bedard to remind everyone of his importance to Chicago. If you follow Canadian hockey talent more broadly, our Canada coverage keeps tabs on the rest.
The big question now is whether this line can keep clicking while the Blackhawks try to climb out of an early hole. With Bedard healthy, the Connor Bedard season debut looks less like a one-night story and more like the start of a turnaround, and fans will get a much better read on that over the next few weeks.
