Apple finally did it. After years of rumors, the company unveiled its first foldable phone at the “Surprise and Shine” event on September 9, and it is called the iPhone Duo. The device opens like a book to reveal a 7.6-inch inner display, making it the largest iPhone screen to date. Pricing starts at $1,999, and preorders open October 16.

The announcement, reported by USA Today from the event floor, positions the iPhone Duo as the centerpiece of Apple’s 2026 hardware lineup. According to USA Today, Apple executives presented the phone as a “passport-sized” device that fits in a pocket while delivering tablet-class screen real estate when unfolded.

It is a significant move for Apple. Samsung and Huawei have sold folding phones since 2019, and Google’s Pixel Fold debuted in 2023. Apple’s entry arrives seven years after the category was invented, but the company is betting its late arrival comes with engineering advantages — starting with a hinge Apple spent considerable stage time explaining.

iPhone Duo specs: displays, chip, and the hinge

The iPhone Duo has two displays. The outer 5.4-inch screen covers about 90% of the iPhone 18 Pro’s screen area and carries a special nano-texture finish that cuts glare. Unfolded, the 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s screen. Both panels use the same nano-texture treatment.

Powering both displays is Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, the same silicon in the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. The phone runs on two built-in batteries that together deliver all-day battery life, though exact milliamp-hour figures have not been disclosed. Storage options span 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB.

The hinge is the engineering story here. Apple says it contains more than 100 components, including carbon fiber and a titanium bottom layer, and that the phone’s body uses grade 5 titanium with high-strength glass beneath the nano-textured cover layers. Johny Srouji, Apple’s chief hardware officer, explained in a statement that Apple uses AI algorithms during manufacturing to match each individual hinge with its best-fit housing so the alignment stays precise — a process he said produces a display that feels premium and flat, resists wear, and minimizes the visible crease that has plagued earlier foldables.

Cameras, unlocking, and how the Duo handles apps

The iPhone Duo carries a dual 48-megapixel camera system on the back, matching the ultra-wide and main cameras of the iPhone 18 Pro. The front camera is 12 megapixels, and the inner display has its own FaceTime camera for video calls with the phone opened or propped up. A Center Stage front camera captures photos and video in any orientation, according to Apple.

One notable omission: there is no Action button, and Touch ID returns in the side button instead of Face ID. You can also unlock the Duo with an Apple Watch. Software is another differentiator. When opened to the full display, you can run different apps side by side or combine them across one larger canvas, and Apple published a developer video series to help app makers adapt to the foldable form factor.

The first-ever foldable iPhone ships in two finishes: star white and night sky. It will run iOS 27.1 out of the box, and it only supports the $79 USB-C Apple Pencil, not the Apple Pencil Pro.

iPhone Duo price and release date

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB. The full pricing breakdown is $1,999 for 256GB, $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB, and $3,199 for 2TB. Preorders open October 16, and the phone hits store shelves October 23.

That price puts the Duo well above the iPhone 18 Pro’s $1,199 starting price, but analysts expect demand anyway. Market research firm IDC forecast in an August report that Apple would ship more than 17 million foldable iPhones by 2027, capturing roughly 40% of the global foldables market and generating over $45.7 billion in sales — even at an average selling price above $2,550.

Samsung, the current foldable leader, wasted no time responding. The company publicly mocked the iPhone Duo announcement shortly after the event, a sign that the rivalry is about to get serious. With Samsung’s Galaxy Fold8 having debuted last month and Huawei still dominant in China, Apple is entering a mature battlefield — but history suggests the iPhone’s ecosystem gravity could rewrite the category’s rules.
