The XRP Ledger has processed more than 13 million autonomous payments made by AI agents, a milestone that puts machine-to-machine commerce at roughly a quarter of all activity on the network. According to Crypto News reporting, RippleX head of engineering J. Ayo Akinyele confirmed the figure on October 10, 2026, stating that XRP Ledger agentic payments had climbed past 13 million transactions across 168 registered merchants on the x402 protocol.
The milestone marks a sharp acceleration. Data attributed to the XRPL AI Hub, a public tracker operated by Ripple-backed t54.ai, showed 13,489,468 agentic transactions around the time of the announcement, settling approximately 6,982 XRP and 12,010 RLUSD in cumulative value. A later check recorded more than 13.6 million transactions, confirming the tracker kept climbing after Akinyele's post.
How the x402 payment rail works
The x402 protocol gives AI agents a way to pay for digital services without a human approving each purchase. According to Ripple's developer documentation, the protocol uses the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" response: a website or application specifies a payment request before granting access to content, the agent responds with a signed transaction, and a facilitator verifies and submits it to the blockchain.
That mechanism fits the kind of micropayments autonomous software needs. Ripple describes the flow as suited to automated payments involving API access, data subscriptions and AI model inference, as U.Today reported. An application can pay for access to a data feed or a block of compute without a subscription or a manual checkout, with the XRPL settling each transaction in three to five seconds. Developers choose between XRP, the ledger's native asset, and RLUSD, Ripple's dollar-pegged stablecoin, for payments that need a fixed dollar amount.
Ripple pushed developers toward this pattern in June with the launch of its XRPL AI Starter Kit, a set of tools for building applications that send and receive payments automatically. The kit includes wallet creation, balance checks, transfer initiation and transaction monitoring, letting agents perform routine payment tasks within predefined limits.
From 1 million to 13 million in three months
The growth curve is the real story. As HokaNews reported, the network recorded just over 1 million agentic payments in July 2026, shortly after t54 launched the XRPL AI Hub. By early September, the count had reached roughly 4 million, according to Coin-Turk's coverage. The jump to 13.5 million by October suggests adoption is compounding rather than tapering.
Akinyele had previously predicted the network would quickly pass 10 million agentic transactions. According to the XRPL AI Hub figures cited across outlets, that benchmark was cleared by a wide margin, with the network averaging about 216,000 agentic payments per day over the preceding week. The engineering lead projected that the next order of magnitude could arrive sooner than the community expects, naming 100 million transactions as a plausible future milestone.
Former Ripple product lead Chandler Fang, now a cofounder of t54.ai, responded to the announcement by pointing to merchant adoption as the next phase. According to Fang, the trajectory — from roughly 1 million in July to more than 13 million in October — shows automated payment activity is outpacing expectations, and the coming stage will involve bringing more real-world merchants and services onchain, with agents paying in XRP and RLUSD through t54's x402 facilitator.
Small payments, big questions
The headline numbers need a qualifier. While 13 million XRP Ledger agentic payments sounds like a large economy, the cumulative settlement totals — roughly 6,982 XRP and 12,010 RLUSD — show that individual payments are small. Transaction volume and transaction value are different measures, and many recorded payments likely involve tiny amounts for individual API calls, data requests or experimental applications.
Earlier research into XRPL's AI transaction activity made the same point about fees: in July, approximately 1.4 million agentic payments generated an estimated $280 in total fees, according to analysis cited by Crypto News. Low-cost automated payments produce volume, not revenue, and the dashboard does not establish how much of the activity comes from independent businesses versus repeated automated requests or developer experiments.
There is also a methodological caveat. The figures come from t54's payment index, which tracks payments associated with its own x402 infrastructure. Agentic payments routed through other facilitators or protocols would not appear in the count, meaning the true total of autonomous transactions on the ledger could be higher — though no one has published that figure.
What comes next for agent commerce
The next test is whether agents start paying real businesses rather than experimental services. Fang framed merchant integration as the decisive phase, and RippleX is preparing the infrastructure: at XRP Seoul 2026 on October 3, Akinyele discussed verifiable identities, spending controls and secure wallets for agents transacting on the ledger.
No deadline has been announced for the 100-million milestone, and neither Ripple nor t54 has committed to one. But the trajectory of XRP Ledger agentic payments gives the ecosystem its first large-scale proof that autonomous software can pay for the resources it consumes at meaningful volume. If merchant adoption follows, the ledger's agent economy will start to look less like an experiment and more like infrastructure.
