The Cynicism Epidemic
Politicians lie. The system is rigged. Nothing ever changes. These beliefs are not entirely wrong, but they are dangerously incomplete. Political cynicism has become the default stance for many Gen Zers — and it is exactly what powerful people want you to feel.
The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
When young people do not vote, politicians ignore young people. When politicians ignore young people, young people become more cynical. When young people become more cynical, they do not vote. The cycle continues, and the people in power stay in power.
The truth is that voting does matter — especially in local elections where margins are often razor-thin. School boards decide what you learn. City councils decide housing policy. State legislatures decide abortion access and voting rights. These elections directly shape your daily life.
Beyond Voting
Voting is the floor, not the ceiling. Real political engagement means organizing, protesting, running for office, and supporting movements that challenge the status quo. It means holding elected officials accountable between elections, not just showing up every few years.
The most effective political actors combine electoral politics with direct action. They vote AND organize. They work within the system while also pushing its boundaries.
The Alternative to Cynicism
Cynicism feels like wisdom but acts as surrender. The alternative is not naive optimism — it is strategic engagement. Acknowledge the system is flawed while working to change it. Recognize corruption while fighting against it.
The people who benefit from the current system want you checked out. Do not give them that satisfaction. Stay informed. Stay angry. Stay engaged. The future depends on it.
