Microsoft revealed the first October wave of Game Pass additions this week, with nine games joining the service over the coming days. The headliner is a brand-new release: the Valor Mortis Game Pass launch lands October 13 as a day-one addition for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members, according to VGC's breakdown of the announcement.
Valor Mortis is a first-person soulslike from One More Level, the studio behind Ghostrunner. Players take the role of William, a former soldier in Napoleon's army who returns from the dead in a plague-ravaged, alternate-history version of 19th-century Europe. French actor Vincent Cassel voices Napoleon himself. The game was originally dated for September 24 before being pushed back into October, so subscribers are getting it just weeks after its planned release date.
Day-one releases are the subscription's main draw for players who follow new games closely, and a soulslike set in the Napoleonic era is an unusual combination. Soulslikes are punishing action games in the Dark Souls mould, known for brutal boss fights and combat where every mistake is punished. This one trades gothic castles for musket-era battlefields. The Valor Mortis Game Pass debut also runs on handhelds, including the ROG Xbox Ally, which gives it a built-in audience among portable players.
For a genre built on difficulty, day-one availability matters more than usual. Soulslike players tend to buy early to avoid spoilers and to take part in the shared discovery of bosses and secrets, and a subscription launch removes the price barrier for curious players who would never pay full price for something this punishing. That is the calculation Microsoft is making with the Valor Mortis Game Pass release: turn a niche genre experiment into a communal launch event.
The rest of the October wave
The wave opened on October 8 with three additions: Echo Weaver and Forever Ago both launched day one for Ultimate and PC Game Pass, while Neon Abyss 2 also reached Game Pass Premium members. That same day the headline pair arrives, Valor Mortis is joined by Deep Dish Dungeon and by Battlefield 6, which reaches the service about a year after its original launch with a new season and EA Play rewards including a deployment pack, a seasonal pack, and a 10 percent discount on eligible EA digital purchases.
Later in the month, Bluey's Happy Snaps and Chained Beasts arrive on October 15, and Beyond These Stars lands on October 16 for PC only. The mid-month arrivals are the biggest names, but the day-one indies give subscribers something new to play right away, and the spread of dates means there is a fresh download waiting almost every week.
What is leaving, and the cloud-gaming clock
Nine games leave the service on October 15, and two of them are heavy hitters: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and A Plague Tale: Requiem. Crime Scene Cleaner, Donut County, Evil West, Nova Roma, Pacific Drive, Superball, and The Casting of Frank Stone are also on the way out. Members who want to keep playing usually get a discount on buying departing titles, though the offer varies by game, as KitGuru notes. Anyone partway through it has one month to finish.
There is also a change coming that affects anyone who plays on a phone or a browser. Starting in November, Xbox will cap the number of hours Game Pass subscribers can spend on cloud gaming, and going over the limit means buying additional play time, VGC reports. Players who treat the service as a streaming platform first should keep an eye on the details of that announcement before it takes effect.
For subscribers, October is a strong month on paper: a day-one soulslike, a major shooter entering the catalog, and a full month to finish two of the year's most talked-about departures before they go. The Valor Mortis Game Pass launch is the clearest example of what the subscription does best, putting a new release in front of millions of players the same day it ships, with no separate purchase required.
