Trump Xi State Dinner Draws Musk, Altman, Tech CEOs

Washington is getting ready for a dinner party that has Silicon Valley refreshing its inbox. The Trump Xi state dinner, set for Thursday, September 24, will see President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump host Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the White House, and the guest list brings together some of the most powerful names in tech. Elon Musk, OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Apple's Tim Cook, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Google CEO Sundar Pichai are all expected to attend, according to reporting by USA Today. The New York Post reports that Dell founder Michael Dell and Citigroup chief executive Jane Fraser are on the list as well.

The Trump Xi state dinner caps a week of carefully staged diplomacy. Xi is expected to arrive in Washington on Wednesday and be greeted personally by Trump when he lands at Joint Base Andrews. The main bilateral meetings happen on Thursday, with the formal dinner in the East Room that evening. It will be only the second state visit hosted by Trump and the first lady this term, after the April visit by King Charles and Queen Camilla, and Xi's first trip to the United States in nearly three years. The two leaders last met in May, when Xi treated Trump to a state banquet in Beijing's Great Hall of the People. Both leaders are also expected in New York this week for the United Nations General Assembly, which is also the setting for a planned Trump-Zelenskyy meeting GenZ NewZ previously covered.

Why the tech CEOs got seats

The guest list is a hint at what will dominate the conversation: artificial intelligence. Trump and Xi are expected to take up AI safety when they sit down, according to USA Today, at a moment when Washington has been buzzing about the speed of AI development. Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei said last week that AI research needs more prudence and called for global cooperation on guardrails around the technology. Altman and Musk have both endorsed Amodei's call to slow development for safety reasons. Altman is also expected to brief the United Nations Security Council next week, where an OpenAI spokesperson said he will call for more international coordination on AI.

Trump has so far rejected calls to regulate AI development, arguing the United States cannot afford to hand China an advantage. "We're leading China on AI," he said on September 13. "We're the most sophisticated country in the world and frankly I want to keep it that way, because whoever wins AI wins." That position has put him at odds with voices across the political spectrum. USA Today notes that Republican strategist Steve Bannon and Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont, recently shared a stage to call for more restrictions on AI. Trump has meanwhile announced plans for a new AI Force and a White House AI czar, as GenZ NewZ previously reported. Thursday's table will seat the people building the technology, some of the loudest voices urging a slower pace, and the two leaders running the race between the world's two biggest economies.

Trade is expected to share the agenda. The two countries have been locked in a contest for technological dominance, with chip export restrictions among the most sensitive items between them, and the summit could set the tone for months of negotiations to come.

Washington's hardest ticket to get

Seats at the table are scarce, and everyone in Washington seems to want one. "The formal dinner is the hottest ticket in town," a senior administration official involved in the planning told the New York Post, adding that top political, corporate and tech leaders are competing for a very limited number of seats. "This dinner is a big one, as China is the biggest of them all, and they all want a place at the table," the official said.

Some of Thursday's guests have been through this before. Musk, Huang, Cook and Fraser joined Trump in Beijing in May and attended Xi's banquet for the president at the Great Hall of the People, according to the Post. Cook secured his invitation even though he left his CEO post at Apple last month, the Post reported. The visit's program also includes an official arrival ceremony, an inspection of troops and a spouse's program for Xi's wife, Peng Liyuan, hosted by the first lady, which the Post says lifts the visit above a typical working trip.

The summit meetings take place on Thursday, with the state dinner that evening, before both leaders head to New York for the General Assembly. The official arrival ceremony, the troop inspection and the East Room dinner are all scheduled before the delegations travel north.
