October's full moon has a name, a reputation, and unusually dramatic timing. The Hunter's Moon peaks at 12:12 a.m. EDT on Monday, October 26, according to Fullmoonology, and it rises in Taurus just two days after Mercury stations retrograde. Venus has been moving backward since October 3, so the year's most theatrical full moon arrives while the planets governing love and communication are both in review mode.
It is the eleventh full moon of 2026, a year that squeezed in thirteen of them thanks to a Blue Moon back in May, according to Sky at Night Magazine. It is also the second full moon of autumn, following September's Harvest Moon.
Why it's called the Hunter's Moon
The Hunter's Moon is the first full moon after the Harvest Moon, and its name comes from hunting season. With crops harvested and fields bare, summer-fattened deer and fox were easier to spot, and the bright moon gave hunters extra light for the work, according to MoonsunCalendar. The site notes the moon was historically treated as an important feast day in Western Europe and among many Native American tribes.
The October moon answers to other names too: the Sanguine Moon, the Travel Moon and the Dying Grass Moon, all listed by MoonsunCalendar. Emirati Times adds that traditional full moon names are linked to North American Indigenous heritage and agricultural traditions.
One thing this Hunter's Moon is not: a supermoon. Fullmoonology states there will be no full supermoon in October; the year's super full moons fall in January, November and December instead. If you want the oversized moon, November's Beaver Moon is the one to circle, according to Sky at Night Magazine.
What the Taurus full moon means for your money
Astrologers read this one as a money moon. "Say yes to abundance! The full moon in financially savvy Taurus shines a revealing light on your money mindset," the AstroTwins wrote in their October 2026 horoscope. Taurus is the sign of income, savings and the things you own, so a full moon here turns the spotlight on what you earn, what you spend and what you are holding onto out of habit.
Nonchalant Magazine put it more bluntly in its October horoscope: the full moon in Taurus on the 26th, the Hunter's Moon, asks you to decide what, and who, you are actually keeping. That tracks with the rest of the sky. The AstroTwins note that this full moon locks into a tense T-square with the Scorpio Sun and Pluto in Aquarius, which they read as friction around shared money and power.
The timing sharpens the message. Mercury stations retrograde on October 24, right before the full moon, in Scorpio, the sign of debts and joint accounts. Venus is still retrograde too, reviewing relationships and spending since October 3. If a bill looks wrong, a shared expense feels lopsided or a subscription keeps charging you for something you forgot, this is the week astrologers say to look twice. Because full moons mark culmination rather than beginnings, they treat this one as a closing window: settle the debt, cancel the subscription, or finally look at the number you have been avoiding. Our Venus retrograde guide breaks down what each sign should do while the review runs.
How to watch the Hunter's Moon
The good news is that you get more than one night. Fullmoonology notes the moon will look fairly full the day before and after the peak, so the weekend nights of October 24 and 25 work just as well. No telescope is needed. Find a spot with a clear view of the eastern sky after sunset and let your eyes adjust.
If October's moon leaves you wanting a bigger show, November delivers. The Beaver Moon on November 24 is one of 2026's three supermoons, according to Sky at Night Magazine, and the last full moon of autumn. Our Halloween astrology guide has the sign-by-sign read on the spooky season leading up to it, and September's Aries full moon was the fiery counterpart to this grounded one.
