Two weeks before launch, Nintendo just gave Switch Sports Resort its biggest spotlight yet. The new overview trailer, which dropped earlier this week, runs about seven minutes and lays out everything coming to Wuhu Island when the game arrives on October 22, 2026 as a Switch 2 exclusive. It is the most detailed look so far at the follow-up to the 2022 original, and it makes one thing clear: Switch Sports Resort is not just a sports collection anymore.
The big twist is the island itself. Between matches, players can roam the resort freely, exploring on foot or by taking to land, sea and sky. Skateboarding doubles as both a sport and a way to cruise around, using the new controllers' mouse controls to steer; Power Cruising puts you on a jet ski carving through open water; and Prop Plane lets you tilt the controller to fly freely over the resort. While exploring Switch Sports Resort, you can hunt for hidden hibiscus flowers and collect Spocco Photos at sightseeing spots, little side goals that reward curiosity as much as athletic skill. It is a structure that borrows the open-island spirit of the original Wii Sports Resort era and stretches it across a full resort hub.
What Switch Sports Resort adds beyond the original formula
The lineup covers a dozen sports and activities: boxing, table tennis, archery, tennis, volleyball, bowling, basketball, golf, thumb wrestling, power cruising, prop plane and skateboarding, plus a jump rope warm-up. Fans of the series will notice some shake-ups — several old favorites from the Wii Sports Resort days are out, and newcomers like thumb wrestling and skateboarding take their place. Each sport in Switch Sports Resort also comes with rule variants, such as a laid-back tennis match or a high-pin bowling game, which keeps rematches from feeling repetitive.
Single-player gets real attention this time through Island Crown mode, which pits you against seasoned island champions across nine different sports, as well as a Pro League built around climbing competitive ranks. That is a meaningful upgrade for anyone who remembers the series as mostly a party game: there is now a solo progression ladder with actual teeth. The overview trailer walks through these modes in detail, according to Final Weapon, and hands-on previews this week suggest the new controls are the star of the show — particularly skateboarding, which feels purpose-built for the new hardware, as reported by CGMagazine.
Pricing, online play and who Switch Sports Resort is really for
The money side is refreshingly simple. The digital edition lists at around fifty dollars while the physical copy goes for about sixty, according to Dexerto's rundown of the announcement, and pre-orders are already open. There is also a console bundle pairing Switch Sports Resort with the hardware, which is worth a look if you have not picked up the new system yet.
One caveat for online players: multiplayer for up to four players over the internet requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership, so factor that subscription into the cost if your crew plays remotely. Local multiplayer, meanwhile, works out of the box — and this remains, at its core, a living-room game. The motion controls are built for passing a controller around, laughing through bad bowling frames, and settling rivalries in thumb wrestling, which may genuinely become the breakout party sport of the lineup.
The timing tells its own story. The game was revealed during the September 9 Nintendo Direct, the overview trailer followed this week, and hands-on previews landed just days before launch — a classic Nintendo holiday-season runway. For anyone who grew up on Wii bowling at family gatherings, Switch Sports Resort is clearly engineered to hit that same nerve, now with an explorable island wrapped around the sports. If you bought the new console for the big holiday titles, this looks like the couch co-op anchor of the season.
