Podcast advertisers opened their wallets again in August. The top 15 brands in podcasting spent a combined $61.9 million on podcast ads during the month, a 9.2 percent jump from $56.7 million in July, according to new data from Magellan AI reported by Barrett Media. It is the strongest month-over-month gain the medium has seen in recent reporting and a sharp reversal after a 6 percent drop from June to July.
The rebound looks broad. All ten of the ten largest spenders increased their podcast advertising investment compared with July, and only four brands in the top 15 pulled back. Online retailer Quince kept the top spot with more than $7.6 million in estimated podcast ad spend, while Amazon held second at about $6.4 million. BetterHelp, T-Mobile and Toyota rounded out the top five, each spending more than $5.4 million.
Magellan AI's monthly estimates are based on detection of ads across thousands of podcast feeds, and they give the industry its closest look at where advertiser money actually goes. The August numbers suggest the earlier summer slowdown was a brief pause, with brands re-accelerating spend as the industry heads into the fall and holiday shopping season.
Sports podcasts keep pulling the most brand money
When Magellan AI breaks the top 15 down by the genres they favor, sports dominates. Seven of the fifteen biggest advertisers put the largest share of their podcast budgets into sports shows. Five more leaned hardest on comedy, and three on news. That tilt has been building for a while: sports was also the most popular genre among the 1,297 brands that advertised on a podcast for the first time in the second quarter, per Magellan AI's Q2 benchmark report.
The leaderboard underneath Quince and Amazon shows how concentrated the buying remains. BetterHelp spent an estimated $5.9 million, T-Mobile $5.5 million and Toyota $5.4 million. SimpliSafe, Progressive, PepsiCo, DraftKings and Google all ranked in the top ten. Shopify, Wayfair, Helix Sleep and Squarespace were the only top-15 brands to trim spending month over month, while Verizon rounded out the list at about $2.3 million after increasing its spend.
The August rebound also lands in a busy month for the business side of podcasting. An ad platform for independent podcasters launched this month, and a recent test found AI voice-clone ads beating human announcers by 26 percent on listener response. Brands clearly see the channel as worth experimenting in, not just spending in.
Insurance companies continue to be one of the industry's biggest growth stories. Magellan AI's Q2 report, covered by Radio Ink, found insurance spending surged 60 percent year over year to $58.2 million, driven by Progressive, State Farm and UnitedHealth Group. Progressive's August showing, nearly $3.8 million and up from July, suggests that momentum carried into late summer.
Why August matters going into the fall
The broader numbers around the August rebound are encouraging for podcast publishers. Magellan AI's Q2 benchmark, which analyzed 94,823 episodes, put podcast ad spending up 23 percent year over year, with ad load, the share of episode time given to advertising, climbing to a record 8.75 percent. Radio Ink reported that every month in the second quarter outpaced the first quarter's monthly average, and the June acceleration was already pointing to a strong second half.
August's 9.2 percent lift fits that picture. With 1,297 new brands entering podcast advertising in Q2 and established giants like Amazon, Google and PepsiCo still growing their buys, the medium keeps recruiting both new and repeat spenders. The four brands that cut back in August, Shopify, Wayfair, Helix Sleep and Squarespace, were all regular top-15 names, so their pullbacks read as monthly budget pacing rather than any exit from the channel.
For creators and publishers, the genre breakdown is the most useful detail. If seven of the fifteen biggest spenders favor sports and five favor comedy, shows in those lanes face the most competitive and best-funded ad market. News podcasts took the remaining three, led by T-Mobile and SimpliSafe. As upfront planning for the holiday season continues, August's data gives networks a concrete case to bring into rate negotiations this fall.
