Nintendo just made Pikmin Day official, and Pikmin Day came with a surprise animated project from Shigeru Miyamoto himself. On Saturday, the company said November first will now be an annual celebration of the twenty-five-year-old franchise, according to Polygon.
The news dropped in a short video that also covered Pikmin 4 on Switch 2 and the mobile game Pikmin Bloom. If you have ever walked around your block with tiny flower-headed creatures trailing behind you, this one is for you.
Why November first?
Miyamoto explained the date choice in the video. Written as eleven-one, it looks like the original red, yellow and blue Pikmin standing side by side. It is a small, charming reason, and it fits the franchise's gentle sense of humor.
Tomorrow is the first Pikmin Day, which makes today Pikmin Day Eve, as Polygon joked. Nintendo says it plans to repeat the celebration every year, so expect it to become a fixed spot on the gaming calendar.
Meet Hello! Pikmin
The headline reveal is a new project called Hello! Pikmin, which Miyamoto is making with Nintendo Pictures, the studio behind the earlier short film "Close to You." Polygon reports that the first short shows a red Pikmin sneaking up on a seemingly sleeping toad to steal a worn baseball. The toad was not asleep, and it was hungry.
Miyamoto said Nintendo plans to release new animated shorts through the Nintendo Today app and other channels. The plan is one video per month for the near future, which is a steady drip for fans who like their content in bite-sized pieces.
The series also continues a long streak of Pikmin animation. Miyamoto and his team released shorts in two thousand fourteen, and Polygon notes that "Close to You" landed to strong reception a year ago.
Pikmin 4 gets a Switch 2 upgrade
Pikmin 4 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition plus Dandori Academy arrives in November. On Switch 2, players can call Oatchi, the puppy-like companion, using voice commands through the built-in microphone.
Dandori Academy adds new tests built around optimizing your strategy. Limited-time exams will release every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with leaderboards so you can compare your plans against everyone else. Seventy-two stages will arrive over time, according to Polygon.
A free demo lands on November second, covering the opening area and two Dandori Academy challenges. That gives Switch 2 owners a quick way to test the new mode before paying.
Pikmin Bloom and a famous superfan
The mobile side is getting attention too. Pikmin Bloom adds a feature this winter called Secret Caves, where players send their Pikmin into caves to fight enemies and collect treasure that fills a new in-game collection.
Getting in requires maps. Those come from in-game postcards, and also from playing the Dandori Academy challenges in Pikmin 4, which links the console and phone games together. Pikmin Bloom stays free on Android and iOS.
Nintendo also recruited Japanese actor Fuka Koshiba as a spokesperson. She is known for knitting Pikmin-themed headwear in her spare time, and Miyamoto said the goal is to build more excitement around the series going forward.
What fans can do next
The practical checklist is short. Mark November first on the calendar, grab the free Pikmin 4 demo on November second if you own a Switch 2, and keep an eye on the Nintendo Today app for the monthly Hello! Pikmin shorts. Pikmin Bloom players should start collecting postcards now, because maps for Secret Caves will be the gate to the new treasure collection.
It is also a useful reminder of how Nintendo builds loyalty. Rather than chase one giant launch, the company is spreading small moments across a calendar, from voice commands to leaderboards to cartoons, so the series stays in conversation all year long.
What it means
A named holiday, monthly shorts, a Switch 2 edition and a new mobile feature add up to a coordinated push for a franchise that has always been cozy rather than loud. For more game coverage, check the tech desk and the world page on this site. Pikmin Day fans can also watch for the Nov. 2 demo.
The Pikmin Day shows Nintendo treating a quiet strategy series like a flagship, and the first test arrives tomorrow.
