The Olivia Rodrigo number one story just got a fresh chapter: her third album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, is back on top of the chart, and a surprise remix with Chappell Roan is the reason. It is the record's third total week at number one, and it knocked Taylor Swift out of the top spot in the process.
How a Remix Flipped the Chart
For Olivia Rodrigo, number one on the albums chart is familiar territory, but this return is different. Nobody expected a record from the summer to storm back this late in the year, and the Olivia Rodrigo number one comeback shows how fast streaming habits can shift when a fan favourite gets a shiny new version.
According to Billboard, the album returns to number one on the chart dated October thirty-first for a third nonconsecutive week. It jumped up from the runner-up slot with a fifteen percent gain, earning seventy-five thousand equivalent album units in the United States during the week ending October twenty-second.
Billboard says the boost was largely driven by the October fifteenth release of a new remix of the album's latest single, "Expectations," along with its official music video. According to Variety, the lift also pushed Swift's The Life of a Showgirl down from the summit.
That is a pretty wild comeback for a record that arrived months ago. Rodrigo released the album in June, and it opened at number one with four hundred eighty-five thousand units, according to Consequence. It held the top spot for a second week, then slid away, and now one remix has brought it back.
Chappell Roan Makes Her Feature Debut
The remix is Rodrigo's first ever, and Chappell Roan joins it for what Consequence describes as her first guest feature. According to Rolling Stone, the pair take the song back to the eighties, and Roan opens the track by joking, "Oh, Olivia does remixes now."
The video is a campy retro game show called "The Big Expectations Show," with the two stars competing against each other in a Family Feud style setup. Talking Heads frontman David Byrne pops up as the fictional host Johnny Johnson, and producer Dan Nigro shows up too. Roan also adds a new verse that tweaks the lyrics to reference a mediocre female suitor.
"Expectations" is the album's fourth single, following "drop dead," "the cure" and "stupid song." The reworked version was written by Nigro, Rodrigo, Roan and songwriter Amy Allen, and fans clearly showed up: the video reached the top of YouTube's daily music video charts in the United States and globally on October sixteenth.
A Canadian Producer Is in the Credits
There is a local angle here, too. According to Billboard Canada, Canadian producer and songwriter Mike Wise has co-production credits on the remix. He also has guitar, programming, co-production and engineering credits on the original album track, sharing production work with Nigro.
Billboard Canada adds that "Expectations" is charting on the Canadian Hot 100, after previously peaking at number twenty-one on the chart dated June twenty-seventh. Fans in Toronto, Vancouver and everywhere in between can claim a small piece of this victory lap, and it fits right into the wider culture coverage on this site about homegrown talent going global.
Zach Bryan Lands at Number Two
The remix did not get a free ride. Zach Bryan's surprise release, Young Manhood and Other Donatable Organs, debuts at number two with sixty-five thousand five hundred equivalent album units, according to Variety. It features guest appearances from Lana Del Rey and Turnpike Troubadours, and Forbes describes it as an eight-track project.
It is Bryan's sixth album to break the top ten, and his second release this year after With Heaven on Top reached number one in January. The new project arrived with only a few days' notice, which tracks with how he likes to drop music, and it builds momentum toward his tour that kicks off in April next year.
Rounding out the upper chart, Morgan Wallen's latest album stays at number three and Ella Langley's Dandelion holds at number four. Noah Kahan has two albums in the top ten, Drake's Habibti sits at number seven, and SZA's SOS returns to the top ten nearly four years after its release.
Why the Olivia Rodrigo Number One Run Matters
This chart week shows how much a single well-timed moment can do in the streaming era. A fresh version of one song, backed by a funny, shareable video, was enough to revive a full album months after its debut. For fans, it also proves that deluxe-style surprises and features still move the needle.
It is also a reminder that pop and country are battling for attention right now. Rodrigo, Bryan, Wallen and Langley are all packed into the top four, so the next surprise drop could reshuffle everything again. Keep an eye on the music section for the next shake-up, because the race at the top is clearly not over.
