New Verity Trailer: Dakota Johnson Meets Hoover Darkest Heroine

BookTok has a new countdown. Amazon MGM Studios dropped a new Verity trailer on September 25, exactly one week before the Colleen Hoover adaptation arrives in theaters on October 2. The new footage leans into the dread the book is known for: psychological suspense, erotic tension and horror, with Dakota Johnson's Lowen Ashleigh never sure which version of the truth she is standing in.

The setup is familiar to anyone who read the novel when it spread through BookTok. Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer close to financial ruin, who accepts what looks like the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, played by Josh Hartnett, hires her to finish the remaining books in a bestselling thriller series written by his wife, Verity Crawford, played by Anne Hathaway. A mysterious accident has left Verity unable to complete the books herself, so Lowen moves into the Crawford family estate to sort through Verity's notes and drafts.

That is where the story turns. According to The Playlist's coverage of the film, Lowen uncovers a secret, unfinished manuscript at the house, one that may contain chilling admissions about the Crawford family's past. As she grows entangled with Jeremy and the couple's young son Crew, she has to decide whether Verity's writings are lurid fiction, a confession, or the warning signs of a psychopath. The trailer's own tagline does not waste words: "There is no light where we're going."

A director who understands private longing

Michael Showalter directs, which is a more interesting choice than it looks on paper. Showalter previously directed Hathaway in The Idea of You, the 2024 romance about a pop star and an older woman that became one of Prime Video's biggest hits. His wider filmography keeps returning to public image, private longing and people trying to hold onto control of their own story, in The Big Sick, The Eyes of Tammy Faye and Hello, My Name Is Doris. Verity gives him Hoover's most gothic material to work with, and the new trailer suggests he is pushing it into an overt thriller register full of suspicion and narrative games where every scene seems to accuse someone.

The screenplay comes from Nick Antosca, whose credits include the horror anthology Channel Zero and the surreal Brand New Cherry Flavor. That pairing matters, because the novel lives or dies on tone. Readers who have never touched the book should know what they are walking into: this is the Hoover novel fans describe as Rebecca by way of Gone Girl, an authorship mystery tangled up with obsession and domestic dread, not a romance. The new trailer keeps that promise. Verity herself is mostly a looming presence inside the household, while Lowen's growing attraction to Jeremy scrambles every judgment the audience tries to make.

The BookTok effect on opening weekend

The commercial context explains the timing. Verity was self-published by Hoover in 2018 before growing into a publishing phenomenon, and Grand Central Publishing acquired it in 2021. The novel has spent months on the New York Times Best Sellers list and sold more than one million copies in 2023 alone.

Hoover's adaptations have already shown the pipeline works. It Ends with Us turned its BookTok momentum into a box-office event, and the film adaptations of Reminders of Him and Regretting You followed. Amazon MGM Studios is releasing Verity only in theaters on October 2, the same theatrical-first approach used for the earlier titles.

The supporting cast fills out the world around the three leads. Ismael Cruz Cordova, Brady Wagner, Irina Dvorovenko, K.K. Moggie, Michael Abbott Jr. and Alex Cooper all appear in supporting roles. Johnson executive produces alongside Lauren Levine, while Antosca and Alex Hedlund produce through Eat the Cat, Showalter and Jordana Mollick through Semi-Formal Productions, Hathaway through Somewhere Pictures, Hoover through Heartbones Entertainment and Stacey Sher through Shiny Penny.

For Hoover's readers, the question the new trailer raises is not whether the film will keep the novel's central hook, but how far this cast and director will push its games of performance, seduction and dread. The book's ending has fueled years of heated debate online, with readers split into camps over what actually happened and what it means. A second trailer arriving this close to release day is aimed squarely at the built-in audience: a reminder that the movie keeps the novel's edge.
