NASA's newest space telescope just opened its eyes. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope caught its first starlight on September 11, when engineers activated the telescope's main camera, the Wide Field Instrument. Astronomers call the moment "first light": the first time a new observatory's camera catches photons from the sky. For the Roman Space Telescope, it arrived less than two weeks after the telescope launched on August 30.
The first pictures are blurry, and that's fine. The camera's detector array is still stowed in the position it traveled in for launch, far from best focus, so individual stars look more like halos or donuts than points of light. According to NASA, the fuzzy images give engineers a baseline for aligning the optics and tuning the focus. The Roman Space Telescope will shrink each star's light into a crisp point as calibration continues.
Why the blur is good news
Before the Wide Field Instrument could take even this first image, it had to be prepared for the cold of space. NASA gave the camera's 18 infrared detectors 10 days to dry out so moisture wouldn't damage the sensitive electronics. Then the heaters were switched off and the telescope was cooled to minus 225 degrees Fahrenheit. It is still cooling toward minus 300 degrees, the frigid temperature the infrared sensors need to work properly.
With the camera switched on, engineers tested the calibration system, the light filters, and the focus mechanism. In a statement, Wide Field Instrument scientist Josh Schlieder of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center said the team had spent years building and testing the instrument on the ground. "We now have confirmation that it is operational in space," he said. "There is much to do, but we are on our way to groundbreaking science."
A camera built for speed
The Roman Space Telescope is sometimes described as a wide-field sibling to Hubble, and the numbers explain why. Its 300-megapixel camera covers a patch of sky bigger than the apparent size of a full moon in a single shot, with a field of view roughly 100 times that of Hubble. Over its planned five-year mission, Roman is expected to survey more than 50 times as much of the sky as Hubble has in 30 years of work.
That wide view is what makes the Roman Space Telescope's science possible. Roman will hunt for thousands of new exoplanets, map the Milky Way, and scour the universe for signs of dark matter and dark energy. It will even try to photograph planets around distant stars directly. For that job, NASA also powered up Roman's other major instrument, the coronagraph, a complicated series of mirrors and sensors that blocks a star's glare so engineers can spot the much fainter light of orbiting planets. In its first tests, NASA confirmed it can communicate with and control the coronagraph's components from Earth.
What happens next
The Roman Space Telescope is still traveling to its final home, a gravitationally stable point called Earth-Sun L2, about a million miles from Earth. Engineers will keep testing for another month while the instruments settle into their operating temperatures. Roman's fine-guidance system comes next, letting the telescope lock onto targets.
The Roman team will keep a close eye on the observatory for the next month as testing continues. NASA expects the first real images, far sharper than these out-of-focus test shots, to be released to the public by early 2027.
Regular science images are expected around the holiday season, with full science operations scheduled for January 2027. If the schedule holds, the first public pictures could arrive in just a few months. The real payoff, though, is the survey itself: an atlas of the universe, drawn hundreds of times faster than anything that came before it.
The Roman Space Telescope's journey from launch pad to first light took 12 days. The work ahead will take years. For the engineers who spent more than a decade building the telescope, the blurry donuts of light in that first test image were exactly what they wanted to see.
