He said the federation had spoken with national team head coach Lionel Scaloni and decided to invite Messi back so he could "have the goodbye he truly deserves" on Oct. 6 in Argentina. Tapia also said the federation would invite the 2022 World Cup winners who played alongside Messi in Qatar, along with their families, for an unforgettable match he described as "the last tango" of the best player in the world.

The farewell follows Messi's announcement on Aug. 31 that he was retiring from international football after 21 years of national-team duty, a statement he published on his Instagram account. He wrote that the decision hurt him deeply but that the time had come, and that he had always given everything for the jersey in order "to bring you joy and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football," according to the Associated Press.

Messi leaves the national team as its most capped player and its all-time leading scorer, with 125 goals in 207 appearances. He played in a record-tying six World Cups, scored 21 goals in the tournament, and won it in Qatar in 2022 after years of near misses, including runner-up finishes in 2014 and this year. How the send-off was arranged

The squad faces Bolivia on Sept. 30 and Burkina Faso on Oct. 3 before hosting Benin at the Monumental on Oct. 6, ESPN reported. The federation also confirmed that Rodrigo De Paul and Giovani Lo Celso will join the squad exclusively for the match against Benin, even though both are included in the general roster. They were teammates of Messi during the golden run that delivered the 2021 and 2024 Copa America titles and the 2022 World Cup, and Tapia's invitation to the Qatar winners means the championship group will be heavily represented at the Monumental.

The squad Scaloni named for the window also suggests a team already testing what comes next. Young players getting their chance include Roman Vega, Matias Soule, Franco Mastantuono, Gianluca Prestianni and Santiago Castro, while Agustin Giay and Leonardo Balerdi return to the fold, according to Livescore. A few familiar names are absent for various reasons, among them Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada and the retired Nicolas Otamendi. The window's other two matches -- against Bolivia and Burkina Faso -- will decide who carries the shirt forward.
