The Mark Consuelos toe surgery announcement came at the top of Friday's episode of "Live with Kelly and Mark," and the couple spent the segment joking through the details. Consuelos told viewers that Friday was the day: after putting off the procedure for about a year, he would head straight to the surgery right after the show. His wife and co-host, Kelly Ripa, confirmed she would be going with him, and admitted her reasons were not entirely selfless.
Ripa, also 55, said she was not going to pass up the chance to film him coming out of the anesthesia haze, drawing laughs from the studio audience. She reminded him she already had him on video after his last foot surgery.
Why now, and why it hurts
Consuelos explained the reason for the procedure in plain terms. The joint is arthritic, and standing on it hurts. He joked that the goal was better golf, then clarified the real reason: the toe was arthritic, it hurt, it was bad, and he needed help. According to People, the actor and daytime host said the pain had gotten to the point where he could no longer keep pushing the procedure off. Ripa, for her part, downplayed the whole thing the way only a spouse of nearly 30 years can. "It's basically a pedicure," she said. Consuelos was not having it. "No, this is a major surgery," he said. "It's like a C-section for your toe."
Ripa's comeback was immediate: she pointed out, to more audience laughter, that she had not fasted at all for her own C-section and had been wide awake.
A 24-hour fast and a list of demands
One of the funnier stretches of the segment came from Consuelos' pre-surgery instructions. He told the audience he was already feeling "a little loopy" because he had not eaten since the day before. His doctors had him on a 24-hour fast, a detail Ripa could not get past. "I've never heard of fasting for 24 hours before a surgery," she said. USA Today reported that an audience member chimed in that a groin surgery once required the same kind of daylong fast.
He called the rule dumb and said all he wanted was food, adding that he could be talked into eating at any moment.
The couple then turned to recovery. Consuelos read aloud a list of ways loved ones can care for someone after surgery, and translated it into direct instructions for his wife. He wanted her to take over some of his responsibilities, including walking their dog, Lena, and to stay present during his recovery instead of scrolling her phone with her AirPods in.
The shoe is on the other foot
There is some symmetry to all of this. Ripa herself missed several episodes of the show earlier in September after undergoing gum graft surgery, so Consuelos was recently the one watching a spouse recover on the couch. As EW noted, his toe surgery came just weeks after Ripa's oral surgery, which she later described as genuinely painful. Ripa suggested her husband fill his downtime with reading, journaling, knitting, or games, and offered to teach him to knit. He joked he would bedazzle the boot he expects to wear instead.
Friday's episode was pre-recorded earlier in the week, EW reported, so the procedure happened a day or two before viewers ever saw the segment. Consuelos has lived with arthritic pain in the toe since at least 2025, according to EW, which explains the year of delays and why he finally gave in.
For a morning talk show built on the easy chemistry of two people who have been married since 1996, the segment did exactly what it usually does: it turned a medical appointment into appointment television. Fans will hear how the Mark Consuelos toe surgery went soon enough, and if Ripa keeps her promise, the footage will be priceless.
