The Jio Platforms IPO is about to rewrite India's market record books, and the countdown has officially started. Jio Platforms, the telecom and digital arm of Reliance Industries, has set its price band and locked in dates for what will be the biggest public share sale the country has ever seen.
The Jio Platforms IPO by the numbers
According to The Tribune, citing PTI, the price band is set between one thousand sixty-five rupees and one thousand one hundred nineteen rupees per share. The offer is a fresh issue of up to twenty-seven crore equity shares, each with a face value of ten rupees. At the top of the band, that works out to roughly thirty thousand two hundred thirteen crore rupees.
That is about eight percent above the current record held by Hyundai Motor India, whose offering in 2024 raised a little under twenty-seven thousand nine hundred crore rupees. It is also roughly forty-seven percent bigger than the Life Insurance Corporation of India listing, the next largest on the list. Subscription opens on Wednesday, October twenty-first, and closes on Friday, October twenty-third, with anchor investors bidding on Monday, October nineteenth.
Why this one is different
Here is the twist that has finance Twitter buzzing: unlike Hyundai and LIC, this deal has no offer-for-sale component. Hyundai's sale was entirely by its parent company, and LIC's was by the government. With the Jio Platforms IPO, every rupee raised goes to the company itself rather than to selling shareholders.
According to The Indian Express, most of the money has a clear job. Twenty-seven thousand five hundred crore rupees will be used to repay debt, and the balance goes toward general corporate purposes, capped at a quarter of the proceeds. Reliance holds about sixty-six percent of Jio Platforms, while Meta owns just under ten percent and Google holds roughly seven point seven percent.
The market already reacted
Investors did not wait for opening day to place their bets. Reliance Industries shares rallied about four percent on Thursday after the price band dropped, adding more than sixty-four thousand crore rupees to the parent company's market value. The Tribune reported that the rally helped push the Sensex up by more than fifteen hundred points, or about two percent, to settle near seventy-four thousand three hundred.
The Nifty also climbed to its highest close since late September. When one stock can move the entire market like that, you know the IPO is not just another listing. It is a sentiment test for the whole Indian economy.
What regular investors need to know
For anyone thinking of applying, the minimum bid is one lot of twelve shares. At the upper end of the band, that is a bit over thirteen thousand four hundred rupees. The Indian Express reports that not less than thirty-five percent of the net issue is reserved for retail individual investors, and there are carve-outs of up to five hundred crore rupees for employees and up to twenty-five hundred crore rupees for eligible Reliance shareholders.
Shares are expected to list on October twenty-eighth. Financial outlets have also flagged a strong grey market premium, but that is an informal signal, not a guarantee. Analysts quoted by Indian business media point to risks such as valuation and heavy capital spending, so hype alone is a shaky reason to bid.
The bigger picture for Gen Z investors
Jio launched in 2016 with rock-bottom data prices that changed how an entire generation got online. The company now counts more than five hundred twenty-four million subscribers, with a 5G base of about two hundred sixty-eight million as of March, and 5G already makes up over half of its wireless traffic. If you grew up streaming reels on cheap data, you grew up on Jio's network.
Now the company wants retail investors to own a slice of it. The valuation is huge, landing around ten lakh crore rupees, which would put Jio among the most valuable listed firms in India, right alongside Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank. For young first-time investors, the lesson is simple: read the prospectus, understand what you are buying, and never let a record-breaking headline do your thinking for you.
Whatever happens when bidding opens, the Jio Platforms IPO has already done something rare. It has made a stock market event feel like a cultural moment.
