The Jaguars beat Ravens on Thursday night in Baltimore, and it was never really close. Jacksonville rolled to a thirty-three to ten win while a Baltimore team missing both of its top quarterbacks looked like it was playing on fumes.
It is the Ravens' fourth straight loss, and the way it happened tells you how fast a season can slip away.
Jaguars beat Ravens: how the game went
Jacksonville opened with a seventy-seven-yard drive that ended in a one-yard touchdown run by Bhayshul Tuten, according to the Associated Press via ABC News. Baltimore answered with a field goal on its first possession, then went quiet for most of the night.
Trevor Lawrence finished with two hundred forty-two passing yards and a touchdown. His fifty-yard scoring strike to Parker Washington with fifty-eight seconds left in the second quarter made it seventeen to three at halftime.
"That opening drive was huge, just to set the tone," Lawrence said. Coach Liam Coen praised his quarterback for being sharp when the game was still back and forth early on.
A Ravens offense with no quarterback depth
Lamar Jackson, who has a right thumb injury, was officially placed on injured reserve, which will sideline him at least four games, according to NFL.com's league roundup. Backup Tyler Huntley, dealing with a toe injury, joined him on the list.
That left rookie Joe Fagnano, a twenty-five-year-old who made his debut only last weekend against Buffalo. He completed ten of eighteen passes for just sixty yards and threw two second-half interceptions.
Baltimore tried to get creative, snapping the ball directly to Derrick Henry in Wildcat-style looks. Jacksonville was ready. "We practiced Wildcat a ton," Coen said.
The stat that should worry Baltimore
This is the first time in franchise history that the Ravens have lost three straight games by at least twenty points. They fell thirty-five to thirteen to Cincinnati and thirty-six to ten to Buffalo before this one.
The crowd noticed. When Baltimore turned the ball over on downs near midfield in the third quarter, boos rained down. Tight end Mark Andrews said fans have every right to react however they want and that the locker room has to stay together.
Safety Kyle Hamilton also left with a hip injury, and cornerback Nate Wiggins missed the game with an illness. Coach Jesse Minter pushed back on excuses, saying there is no "whatever, we don't have this guy" in his locker room.
Jacksonville is quietly one of the league's best
The Jaguars are now six and two and have won five of their last six games. They hold a three-and-a-half-game lead in the AFC South, and they did it without needing anything flashy, taking care of the ball on a rainy night.
Justice Hill did break a sixty-five-yard touchdown run for Baltimore, ending Jacksonville's streak of twenty-four games without allowing a seventy-five-yard rusher. It was a rare bright spot in a lopsided night.
Chris Rodriguez Jr. added a two-yard touchdown run late after a fumble on a kick return, stretching the lead to thirty-three to three before Hill's long score.
Why this matters beyond one Thursday
Thursday games are tough on the visiting side because of the short week, yet it was the home team that looked unprepared. AP noted that Baltimore seemed like it could have used a longer break, given how thin the quarterback room had become.
For Jacksonville, the win is a statement that the team can handle business against a wounded opponent without taking risks. For Baltimore, the question now is whether a fourth straight defeat is the bottom or just another step down. Fans will get an answer soon, with the Chargers coming to town and a new quarterback possibly in the building.
The Ravens also signed quarterback Austin Reed to the active roster from the practice squad, according to the NFL.com roundup, which shows how scrambled the depth chart has become.
What comes next
Baltimore, now four and five, hosts the Los Angeles Chargers on November sixteenth and is awaiting the arrival of veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett as it tries to stop the slide. Jacksonville travels to Tennessee on November fifteenth.
