Instagram has arrived on Apple TV. The Instagram Apple TV app brings Reels, longer videos and live shows to the television, letting viewers watch creator content on a larger screen instead of a phone. According to MacRumors, the app appears to have launched on October 23, based on Apple TV release data for the television version of the app. An archived App Store listing from a few days earlier still showed compatibility with phones and tablets only, which points to a quiet rollout rather than a staged announcement.
The television version is built around watching. Viewers can discover videos from creators they follow, browse creator pages and resume a video on the television after starting it on another device. Instagram describes the experience as a way to watch together with friends and family, a shift from the solo scrolling that defines the phone app. The Instagram Apple TV app keeps the focus on playback, so the living room version feels closer to a video service than a full social feed.
How the television version works
On the television, the Instagram Apple TV app covers the formats that now define Instagram video. Reels play alongside longer creator videos and live shows, giving viewers a mix of short clips and extended material in one place. Viewers can follow creators from the television and keep track of new videos from accounts they already watch. The app also supports picking up a video partway through, so a clip started on a phone does not have to be restarted from the beginning on the television screen.
The television app does not copy every feature from the phone. According to reports on the launch, viewers on Apple TV cannot post comments, send direct messages or change parental supervision settings from the television. Those limits leave the app as a viewing tool first, with posting and messaging still handled on phones and tablets. The Instagram Apple TV app is free to download from the Apple TV App Store, with optional in-app purchases listed on the store page, and it requires tvOS 26 or later to run.
The fourth television platform
The Instagram Apple TV app makes Apple TV the fourth television platform to get the app. Instagram began testing its television app on Amazon Fire TV in the United States last December, then expanded to Google TV in February and to Samsung smart televisions in June. On the earlier television platforms, short videos were grouped into channels based on viewer interests, with videos playing automatically. That approach suited a television audience that was used to letting a programme run, rather than choosing each clip by hand.
The move to Apple TV follows a longer effort to put Instagram on larger screens. Instagram released a dedicated tablet app last September after years of requests for an interface designed for tablets. The television rollout then extended the same idea further, taking video that was made for phones and giving it a place in the living room. Each step has kept the core idea intact, which is video made by creators, presented in a form that fits the screen in front of the viewer.
What to check before downloading
Availability is not uniform everywhere yet. Reports on the launch describe the Instagram Apple TV app as documented on the United States storefront, while a report from another market showed the app installing on Apple TV but displaying a message that it was not yet available in that region. That gap means installing the app does not guarantee access in every country. Viewers outside the United States should check the Apple TV App Store in their own region before expecting the full service to work.
For creators, the television screen changes how their work is seen. A short clip that was made to be watched alone on a phone can now play for a room full of people, and a longer video or live show gains a setting that suits group viewing. The Instagram Apple TV app also gives Instagram another way to hold attention at home, at a time when short video competes with streaming services for evening viewing. Whether viewers adopt it in large numbers will depend on how often they choose the television over the phone for the same creators.
