That 'Filter' Look, IRL: How to Slay Your Makeup

Ever taken a selfie with a perfect filter and wished you could just walk around like that all day? 😭 We feel you. Well, stop wishing, because makeup artist Leah Halton just dropped the ultimate tutorial on how to get that "filter blurring snatching effect" in real life, and GenzNewz is here with the breakdown.

As Leah says, this look isn't about being natural—"Today is about perfection" [[02:32](https://www.google.com/search?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D152s)]. Get your blenders ready, because we're diving in!

The Base: Flawless & Poreless 💖

The goal is skin so smooth, it looks like it's been airbrushed.

  • Primer is GOAT: Start with a mattifying, poreless primer. We want a seamless base, so don't be shy [[01:07](https://www.google.com/search?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D67s)].
  • Mattifying Foundation: Use a full-coverage (but not thick!) foundation with a brush for a flawless blend [[07:52](https://www.google.com/search?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D472s)].
  • Go Crazy with Blush/Bronzer: Filters always have us looking snatched and sun-kissed. Leah says to go "crazy" with a neutral-tone bronzer [[09:31](https://www.google.com/search?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D571s)] and blend your blush high on the cheeks in a "W" shape [[10:46](https://www.google.com/search?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D646s)].
  • The Snatched Nose: Use a bright concealer right up the sides of your nose bridge to get that sharp, filtered look [[09:15](https://www.google.com/search?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D555s)].

Brows: Laminated to the Gods 💅

We're not going for fluffy and natural. We want perfection.

  • Laminate 'Em: Use a sticky brow gel to literally laminate your brows flat to your face. Leah's tip? "Not one hair out of place" [[01:56](https://www.google.com/search?q=httpin.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D116s)].
  • Carve & Conceal: This is a 2016-meets-2020 vibe. Take concealer and "carve out" the underneath of your brow for that super sharp definition [[02:56](https://www.google.com/search?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D176s)].

Eyes: Big, Bright & Extra 👁️

Filters always make the eyes pop, so that's where we're putting in the work.

  • Simple Shadow: Keep the shadow simple with soft browns in the crease [[04:02](https://www.google.com/search?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D242s)]. Pat a nude cream color (not stark white!) on the lid to make your eyes look "open and twinkly" [[04:52](https://www.google.com/search?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D292s)].
  • Strategic Liner:
    1. Tightline your upper waterline with a black pencil for smokiness [[06:25](https://www.google.com/search?q=httpsLi.www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D385s)].
    2. Use a cream-colored pencil on your lower waterline to look wide-awake [[07:19](https://www.google.com/search?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D439s)].
    3. Create a "second eyeline" by smudging brown shadow just under your lower lashes. Leah notes this is an old Marilyn Monroe trick to make eyes look bigger! [[15:21](https://www.google.com/search?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D921s)]
  • Mascara Mania: Go "absolutely crazy" with mascara on your top lashes [[07:24](https://www.google.com/search?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D444s)].

The Finish: Set, Define & Shine 💋

It's time to lock it all in and add those final filter-like details.

  • Set with Powder: Use a super-fine loose powder (Leah loves Fenty's strawberry milk) with a powder puff to press it in. This gives a "mattified and shiny" effect [[11:02](https://www.google.com/search?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D662s)].
  • Reverse Contour: Use a pigmented pressed powder to "reverse contour" and make your highlighted areas pop like crazy [[13:07](https://www.google.com/search?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D787s)].
  • Lock It In: Use a truly mattifying setting spray (like One Size) that won't add shine back to your face [[14:07](https://www.google.com/search?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D847s)].
  • Overline Lips: What's a filter without plump lips? "Overline the heck" out of them! [[14:55](https://www.google.com/search?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D895s)] Pat a tiny bit of your blush on your lips to tie the whole look together [[15:10](https://www.google.com/search?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D904s)].
  • Icy Highlight: Use a "very white sparkly" (not natural!) highlighter for a dot on your nose and on your cheeks [[14:29](https://www.google.com/search?q=httpHi.www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dr9x2Vvt6Mz8%26t%3D869s)].

The final look is a total slay: perfectly blurred, snatched, and defined. It's the ultimate main-character makeup for when you want to feel flawless.
