The EQT Range Resources merger just created the biggest natural gas producer in the United States. EQT said on Monday it will buy Range in an all-stock deal worth about thirteen billion dollars, according to Reuters. The bet is simple: more gas will be needed, and whoever controls supply wins.

Both companies drill in the Appalachian Basin, the huge shale region under Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. Putting them together means one giant with a lot of land, pipes and drilling runway.

The deal in numbers

Range shareholders will receive zero point nine eight seven EQT shares for each share they own, which values the equity at about twelve point eight three billion dollars, according to a Reuters report. After closing, Range holders would own roughly twenty-seven percent of the combined company.

The new company would produce more than nine billion cubic feet equivalent a day. It would hold over thirty years of drilling inventory across nearly three million net acres and control more than thirty-seven hundred miles of midstream infrastructure.

Closing is expected in the first quarter of 2027, subject to shareholder and regulatory approval, according to The Motley Fool. A termination fee of four hundred twenty-three million dollars is payable by Range to EQT under certain conditions, based on EQT's quarterly filing.

Why gas is suddenly hot

Reuters reported that US gas producers are racing to consolidate ahead of a step change in domestic demand. Two things are driving it: new liquefied natural gas export terminals coming online, and a buildout of gas-fired power plants to feed data centers.

That is where the AI boom meets the pipeline. Training and running big models takes enormous electricity, and utilities are leaning on gas to keep the lights on. EQT chief executive Toby Rice told Reuters the deal "increases our market access to what we believe are the two premium markets in this world," meaning Appalachia at home and LNG abroad.

Rice also said EQT now sees potential Appalachian gas demand growth above twenty-five billion cubic feet a day, up from an earlier estimate near twenty billion. The company targets fifteen percent of its gas sales being exposed to international markets.

Savings and market reaction

EQT expects three hundred twenty-five million dollars in annual savings within two years and more than six hundred million over the longer term, according to the economos report. It also projects about twenty billion dollars of free cash flow over five years at recent prices.

Range shares jumped about sixteen percent in New York on Monday. EQT shares were down about two and a half percent on Thursday morning, trading around fifty-five dollars, as quoted by The Motley Fool.

Both companies skipped their usual earnings calls this week because of the pending merger. EQT reported net debt of five point four seven billion dollars at the end of September, while Range reported about seven hundred ninety-four million dollars and record liquids output.

For anyone wondering why a finance story belongs on your feed, think about your power bill and your phone. Every chatbot answer and streaming session runs through a data center, and those buildings need steady electricity. When producers merge to secure supply, the price and reliability of that power eventually shows up downstream, from household utility bills to the cost of cloud services that apps you use every day depend on. It is a slow-moving story, but the consequences reach well beyond Wall Street.

What to watch

The big questions are whether regulators wave it through and whether shareholders on both sides approve. There is also the climate angle: a bigger gas giant locks in more fossil fuel production just as the world argues over how fast to cut emissions. Supporters say gas is cleaner than coal and needed for reliability, while critics say it delays the shift to renewables.

Either way, the message to Wall Street is clear. Energy is the new bottleneck for tech, and gas producers want to own it. Catch more money stories in our business section and our climate coverage.
