Ryan Gosling is bringing back his spooky rock project, and the Dead Man's Bones reunion is the Halloween surprise nobody saw coming. The Barbie star and his bandmate Zach Shields teased brand new music this week, their first in seventeen years, with a release date set for October twenty-seventh.
The teaser that started it all
The duo announced the comeback on Thursday in an Instagram video, according to Billboard. The short clip has a distinctly Halloween feel, showing a man's head floating in a sinister spiral while a voice recites eerie lines about winds black as midnight breath.
A young girl's voice then interrupts the creepy narration to shout the date, October twenty-seventh. The post was shared by the band and by their label ANTI- Records, which also released the duo's debut album, as reported by Billboard.
At press time there was no word on the title of the new project, and nothing about which label will put it out. So fans are left with a countdown and a lot of questions.
Eva Mendes hyped it first
Gosling's wife, actress Eva Mendes, has been quietly building the hype on her own feed. Earlier this week she posted old horror movie footage set to the haunted track In the Room Where You Sleep, then shared a video of herself walking through a grove of trees while his ghostly voice sang over it.
Her caption joked that she was trying to summon new music from Dead Man's Bones. After the teaser dropped she reposted it and wrote that he came through on a promise to her. It is a very wholesome origin for a very spooky comeback.
Where the band came from
Dead Man's Bones began as a side project between Gosling and Shields, a screenwriter and producer whose credits include Krampus and Godzilla vs. Kong. Their self-titled debut arrived in two thousand nine and was recorded with the Silverlake Conservatory's Children's Choir, which gave the songs their creepy, singalong sound.
On that record Gosling sings lead on chilling tracks such as Buried in Water, and he plays piano, guitar, synthesizer, percussion, cello and bass. Fan favourites include the jazzy My Body's a Zombie for You and the eerie Werewolf Heart.
It was never a huge chart act, but it built a loyal cult following over the years, especially every October when playlists turn spooky. That slow-burn legacy is a big reason this announcement hit so hard online.
Gosling's musical side
This is not the actor's first time at a microphone. He released a ten-track solo album called Angel With Tattooed Wings in the year two thousand, long before his film career took off. Since then he has sung in movies including Lars and the Real Girl, Blue Valentine, La La Land and Song to Song.
His most famous musical moment is probably I'm Just Ken from Barbie, which earned an Oscar nomination and became a meme-powered anthem. He was most recently on screen in Project Hail Mary, and he has clearly kept the music bug alive.
Why this reunion feels different
Most comebacks are announced with a tour poster and a press release. This one arrived as a short, strange video with a child shouting a date, which fits the band's whole personality perfectly. It feels handmade, and that is exactly why fans are so invested.
Seventeen years is also a very long gap for a side project, and it makes the surprise feel earned. The teaser even nods to the band's old world with lines about ghosts leaving our world to dance at twilight time, which fans are already dissecting for clues about the new songs.
What to expect next week
Nobody outside the band knows what the new songs will sound like, but the teaser suggests the group is leaning back into haunted, gothic storytelling. Expect choir vocals, creepy lyrics and plenty of Halloween energy when the Dead Man's Bones return lands on October twenty-seventh.
For Gen Z fans who discovered the band through TikTok edits and spooky playlists, this is a rare chance to experience a real reunion in real time. Keep an eye on our music page and our movies page for more once the songs arrive.
