Darius Acuff, the nineteen-year-old rookie guard for Sacramento, dropped a historic stat line on Thursday night, and his Sacramento team still lost. The Kings fell to the New Orleans Pelicans, one hundred thirty-two to one hundred twenty, to slide to an ugly five losses in five games. The Darius Acuff breakout is the one bright spot in a season that already feels like a crisis in California.
The Night Acuff Went Off
According to Sports Illustrated's Kings site, Acuff finished with thirty-four points, fourteen assists and six rebounds while shooting thirteen of twenty-six from the field and five of five at the free-throw line. He added two steals. He had twenty-one points by halftime, flashing the three-level scoring that made Sacramento take him seventh overall.
Basketball nerds immediately dug into the record books. Data tracked by HoopsMatic shows Acuff is the youngest player to post a thirty-point, ten-assist game since Luka Doncic in the 2018-19 season. He also tied LeBron James, Zach LaVine and Josh Giddey for the most assists by a teenager on record, with fourteen.
There is another detail that should make Kings fans smile through the pain. HoopsMatic notes that Acuff joined LeBron James, back in 2003-04, as the only teenagers on record to pair thirty points with twelve assists in a single game. That is serious company for a kid who is only a handful of games into his pro career.
Why Sacramento Still Lost
The Kings actually looked sharp early, ending the first quarter up thirty to twenty-four. Then the same old story played out. Sports Illustrated reports the Pelicans opened the third quarter on a twenty-six to seven run and never looked back, even though New Orleans was playing the second night of a back-to-back and had also started the year winless.
Depth is a huge problem. The same SI report says Sacramento's bench played forty-two minutes and scored just eight points, while New Orleans reserves logged eighty-eight minutes and scored thirty-nine. Without backup bigs, Precious Achiuwa has been forced to moonlight at center, and three Kings starters played more than forty minutes.
Domantas Sabonis, meanwhile, had a quiet scoring night with nine points but grabbed fifteen rebounds, and HoopsMatic says he passed Dominique Wilkins on the all-time rebounding list. He leads the league in rebounds per game this season. Individual numbers are not the issue for this roster, because the wins simply are not coming.
Think about what that means for a Gen Z audience that grew up watching those names. A teenager is already running a full NBA offense and creating shots for everyone around him, despite zero help from the bench. Darius Acuff plays with the kind of confidence that SI says no one will ever question, even if his defense still needs work.
The Pelicans Got Their Moment Too
New Orleans did not need a rookie miracle to earn its first win. Per HoopsMatic, Jeremiah Fears posted twenty-two points, thirteen assists and four blocks, a double career high in assists and blocks, and Zion Williamson scored twenty-two on ten-of-twelve shooting with five steals. That made Williamson the first Pelican with a twenty-point game and five steals on eighty percent shooting or better.
Fears also won the matchup of young guards on paper. The two former lottery picks traded buckets all night, which made this one of the more entertaining early-season games despite the loss column both teams were staring at. For a league that loves a young-star narrative, it was exactly the kind of Thursday that goes viral on social media.
What Comes Next for the Kings
Sacramento is now one of the last winless teams, and HoopsMatic says it is their first zero-and-five start since the 2019-20 season. SI also notes that the seat is not cold for coach Doug Christie, which tells you how much pressure is building around this group.
The schedule does not offer a breather. The Kings stay on the road for a Halloween night game against the Memphis Grizzlies, who are five and zero after beating Portland, then face Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks before heading home. Another loss would make the early hole very hard to climb out of.
For now, the story is bigger than one result. Acuff is already leading all rookies in points and assists per game, with twenty-four points and about six and a half assists, according to HoopsMatic. Rookie of the Year chatter around Darius Acuff is real, but so is the question of whether the front office can build a team around him fast enough. Every Darius Acuff highlight adds to the pressure on Sacramento to find some wins soon.
