Senegal opened the first Olympic sporting event ever held on African soil on Saturday, as the Dakar Youth Olympic Games began with an opening ceremony at the Stade Abdoulaye Wade in Diamniadio. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye declared the Games open in front of a packed stadium, with International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry watching from the stands.
The ceremony closed a wait that stretched back to the original award of the event, and Coventry told the crowd the moment was "a long time in the making," according to Reuters. She described the occasion as a moment for Senegal and for Africa, and said the Games would show a capacity on the continent that is sometimes underestimated, in a statement at a sport and development summit held earlier on Saturday.
More than 11,000 participants took part in the ceremony, including 700 dancers, and a short film honoured figures who advanced African sport. French actor Omar Sy and Senegalese-Italian creator Khaby Lame, both ambassadors for the event, attended the ceremony. According to the IOC, the opening ceremony was televised live in more than 30 countries, with every African nation committed to showing the competition live.
The scale of the competition
Almost 2,700 athletes aged 14 to 17 from 204 national Olympic committees will compete through November 13. The programme covers 25 sports and 153 medal events, alongside ten engagement sports designed to mix competition with education and cultural exchange. Events are spread across Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly, the coastal resort about 80 kilometres from the capital, while the athletes' village sits at Amadou Mahtar Mbow University in Diamniadio.
The Dakar edition also breaks new ground in who competes. A Refugee Olympic Team appears at a youth edition for the first time, with six athletes hosted by the national Olympic committees of Kenya and Uganda competing in athletics, judo and taekwondo. It is also the first edition to reach full gender equality across quota places, sports, disciplines and events, according to the IOC. Senegal itself fields 136 athletes, the host nation's largest team at a youth edition.
Competition began before the formal opening, with baseball5 matches starting the day before the ceremony. Athletics runs from November 8 to November 10 at the Iba Mar Diop complex in Dakar. Organisers said they dealt with last-minute energy and rain problems in the run-up to the opening, with more than 6,000 volunteers helping to run the event.
A long road to Diamniadio
Dakar won the hosting rights eight years ago, when Coventry was already a member of the IOC, and the event was originally scheduled for 2022 before Senegal and the IOC agreed to postpone it during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Dakar edition is the fourth Summer edition, following Singapore in 2010, Nanjing in 2014 and Buenos Aires in 2018. No African country had staged an Olympic event before Saturday, despite decades of African athletes shaping Olympic history.
The IOC says a Dakar 2026 Learning Academy has trained hundreds of young professionals from Senegal and elsewhere in Africa in Games planning, sports operations and specialist roles, part of an effort to leave skilled organisers behind once the event ends. Venues in Diamniadio, including the university village and the stadium, were built or upgraded for the fortnight, and organisers say the programme of engagement sports is meant to draw in young people who may never compete at an elite level.
Coventry's own presence carries its own weight: the former Zimbabwean swimming champion, elected in 2025, is the first African and the first woman to lead the IOC. She arrived in Dakar days before the opening and inspected the venues and the athletes' village, telling reporters the venues looked wonderful and the village felt like those in Paris or Milan. For Senegal, the fortnight is a test of organisation and a chance to put Dakar at the centre of youth sport on the continent, in the words of Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo.
Reporting on the build-up was provided by Reuters and the Associated Press, with further detail on the ceremony from Newsunplug and the official Dakar 2026 site. Medal competition continues daily until the closing ceremony at the end of the fortnight. More weekend sport coverage: the World Cup semi-final race and the World Series parade in Milwaukee.
