The Cardano Card shutdown is now scheduled for October 31, 2026. The program's official account announced the cutoff on October 13 in a post on X, telling holders the card will keep functioning normally until then. U.Today reported the announcement, quoting the account's explanation: Wirex, the card's issuing partner, is moving to a non-custodial model and retiring the custodial infrastructure the card relied on.
Wirex's pivot is the entire reason for the Cardano Card shutdown. The payments company is shutting down the custodial setup that held and settled card balances, and that retirement ends the partnership that made the card possible. According to CoinMarketCap's coverage, the Cardano Card account told holders they would hear the news from the team first, since the change affects them directly, and asked anyone holding a card to reach out for guidance on next steps. The account promised more details on the program's future soon, without naming a timeline or a successor product.
What the card offered
The card launched in November 2025, when EMURGO, the commercial arm of the Cardano ecosystem, announced a partnership with Wirex at the Cardano Summit in Berlin. It lived inside the Wirex app, which EMURGO described at the time as a payments platform with more than six million users across one hundred thirty countries. The pitch was broad: spend more than six hundred eighty-five cryptocurrencies and stablecoins, including ADA, bitcoin, ether and USDC, anywhere Visa is accepted, online or in a shop.
Spending was only part of it. The card opened the door to Wirex's DeFi services, including loans, yield products and X-Accounts, and it dangled up to eight percent crypto cashback on purchases plus referral bonuses. A share of the program's profits was even earmarked for the Cardano Treasury, tying the card's success to the network's own funding. The card's own site listed SOL, XRP and USDT among the supported assets, and described the card as distributed by EMURGO and issued by Wirex, a principal member of both Visa and Mastercard. For Cardano supporters, it was the ecosystem's first mainstream on-ramp: a way to use ADA for groceries without touching an exchange.
No replacement named yet
More than a week after the announcement of the Cardano Card shutdown, there is still no confirmed replacement. AltcoinBuzz reported that no new card, new provider, or alternative payment arrangement has been named. The Cardano Card account said more details would be shared soon, and asked affected holders to contact the team directly for instructions on the transition. At the time of the announcement, holders had a little under three weeks of ordinary spending left before the cutoff.
For now, the practical picture is simple. The card works as normal until the cutoff, then it stops. Anyone keeping a balance on the card or counting on the cashback has a short window to make other plans. The team has said holders should hear from it first on what comes next, which makes the official account the one to watch rather than rumor threads. With no successor product announced, anyone relying on the card as a daily spending tool will need a different way to get crypto into the checkout line.
The chain underneath keeps moving
The shutdown lands while ADA trades near twenty-two cents, down about one point three percent from the prior day's close, according to market data. The network itself has been busy. Cardano's Epoch 660, the accounting period covering early October, processed a record of nearly one point eight million transactions, according to Cexplorer data cited by Crypto.news. The same period brought heavy selling: analyst Ali Martinez reported, citing Santiment data, that large holders offloaded more than one hundred ten million ADA over five days.
Development continues regardless. The Cardano Foundation said its programmable token standard, CIP-0113, went live on mainnet on October 7, letting regulated assets carry compliance rules such as identity checks and transfer restrictions. Whether the Cardano Card returns with a new partner or fades into an experiment that ran its course remains unannounced. Until the team shares those promised details, the Cardano Card shutdown marks the end of the card's run of letting people spend ADA at any Visa terminal.
