Brian White scored his 100th Major League Soccer goal on a Whitecaps record night at BC Place, where the Vancouver Whitecaps beat San Diego FC 4-1 on Wednesday to strengthen their hold on first place in the Western Conference.
Aleksa Cvetkovic opened the scoring in the 24th minute with his first MLS goal, redirecting a pass from Mathias Laborda across the goal. White headed home a curling pass from Oliver Larraz just before halftime to double the lead, ending a run of matches without a goal. Ryan Gauld added the third goal on a diving header in the 66th minute, and Bruno Caicedo finished a breakaway past goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega in the 76th minute. Onni Valakari pulled one back for San Diego with a header in the 83rd minute, but the visitors never threatened a comeback.
White became the 17th player in MLS history to reach the century mark, according to the Associated Press. The goal was his 18th in league play this season and extended a scoring record built since his move to Vancouver in 2021, where he has scored 98 times across all competitions. The 30-year-old joined the Whitecaps in a trade from Red Bull New York, and the campaign is his best scoring season in league play, with two assists to go with his goals. White began his MLS career with Red Bull New York, where he was a SuperDraft pick, before the move west.
White said the milestone was something he had always wanted to reach, but added that winning MLS Cup was "first and foremost" on his mind. The result kept Vancouver on course for the top seed in the West, and White's header settled a match the home side controlled for long stretches.
Gauld finished the night with a goal and an assist, capping a strong display in midfield. Cvetkovic, who joined Vancouver in August after three seasons in the Serbian SuperLiga, scored the opener, and Vancouver kept San Diego under pressure until the closing minutes.
A club scoring record falls
Gauld's header was Vancouver's 67th goal of the regular season, a new club record with matches still to play, according to Major League Soccer. The total passed every previous Vancouver regular-season mark and underlined an attack that has produced goals from across the squad. The record total came with matches still to play, leaving Vancouver room to extend the mark in the final fixtures. Thomas Müller also returned from injury in the 74th minute after almost a month out, adding experience to a side chasing the conference title.
Müller had missed the previous matches after suffering a hamstring injury against the Chicago Fire on October 6, reported by TSN. His return gives head coach Jesper Sørensen another attacking option for the run-in. Caicedo, a 21-year-old Ecuadorian winger, scored his sixth goal of the season.
Sørensen praised an aggressive, fast start and said the performance mattered more than the standings. Vancouver reached the MLS Cup and Concacaf Champions Cup finals last season, and Sørensen said the team was ready to attack the remaining fixtures in pursuit of the conference title.
What the win means in the West
Vancouver moved to 58 points from 32 matches. Dallas lost 2-0 to Columbus earlier on Wednesday, leaving the Whitecaps four points clear of second-place Dallas. Another win would secure the top seed in the West, home-field advantage through the playoff run toward the December final, and a place in the 2027 Champions Cup.
San Diego dropped to 8 wins, 13 losses and 11 draws. The loss eliminated San Diego from playoff contention and stretched a winless run to 10 matches, with five draws in that stretch. San Diego visits St. Louis on Saturday.
Vancouver travels to Seattle on Sunday for a match shown on Apple TV, before hosting CF Montréal on Decision Day. A win on Sunday would settle the conference race before the home finale against Montréal. The Whitecaps lost last season's MLS Cup showdown to Inter Miami, and the closing fixtures offer a chance to enter the playoffs as the West's top seed.
