Avengers: Endgame Encore Hits Theaters Sept. 25 With Doomsday Footage

Avengers: Endgame Encore, Marvel's theatrical re-release of the 2019 blockbuster, returns to theaters this Friday, September 25, and its trailer has already set a record. The trailer drew 77 million views in its first 24 hours, according to Deadline, a record for a re-release trailer and roughly quadruple the previous mark. Tickets for the run are on sale now, and the trailer is available to watch online.

The response is easy to understand. Avengers: Endgame remains one of the highest-grossing films ever released, and its reputation was built on the experience of watching it in a packed room. The Encore trailer plays to that directly, cutting audience reaction footage from the 2019 premiere into new shots from the re-release.

A trailer that broke the re-release record

Re-release trailers have never been a major draw on their own. The 40th-anniversary trailer for Top Gun and re-release trailers for Avatar and Titanic each put up respectable numbers, but the Encore spot left them far behind. Deadline, which first reported the figure, framed the debut as four times the previous re-release record.

Part of the pull is what the trailer promises. Alongside the familiar moments from the 2019 film, it advertises an exclusive look at Avengers: Doomsday, the next Avengers team-up, scheduled for December 18. GamesRadar described the trailer as a direct appeal to anyone who remembers the electricity of the original theatrical run, from the portals sequence to Captain America lifting Mjolnir, and an invitation to feel it again.

What the new footage actually is

The re-release runs 185 minutes, about four minutes longer than the original cut. Marvel has confirmed the extra material connects Endgame to the next Avengers film, and it will not play on every screen. The new footage is exclusive to IMAX and Disney's certified Infinity Vision auditoriums, which the company markets as the biggest, brightest, and most immersive way to see the film. Standard screenings get the original cut without the additions.

Co-director Joe Russo addressed the plan this summer during an appearance at the Sands Film Festival. He called the re-release critically important ahead of Doomsday and said the production added footage set within the Doomsday story directly into Endgame, describing it as a way to build a bridge between the two films. His remarks were reported by Deadline.

Marvel has kept the contents of the footage quiet. Fan speculation has centered on the consequences of the Avengers' time heist and Steve Rogers' decision to stay in the past, given how directly time manipulation could feed into the story Doomsday is expected to tell. The studio has confirmed nothing specific about which scenes were added.

The extras are not limited to the new scenes. The Encore presentation also includes a custom introduction and a new post-credits sequence, according to the film's production history, giving even longtime fans material they have not seen before. The film was freshly color-graded for the re-release, and Disney's Infinity Vision certification tells audiences which theaters meet the technical standards for the premium presentation.

Why Marvel wants you back in a theater

Doomsday will be the first Avengers team-up since Endgame closed out the Infinity Saga seven years ago. The Encore run is aimed squarely at reminding audiences what that era felt like before the new chapter begins. When Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced the re-release at San Diego Comic-Con in July, he pointed to the memory of a full theater in 2019, with crowds cheering together, as the reason for bringing the film back.

There is a practical side to the timing as well. Opening the re-release roughly three months before Doomsday gives viewers who have not followed every Marvel release since 2019 a reason to catch up in the format that made the franchise famous. The Russos have framed the outing as essential rather than optional, which sets a high bar for four minutes of new material.
