Audiohook is giving away what might be the most valuable thing in podcast advertising: the data itself. The company announced on Sept. 30 that it has acquired Podscan Inc., an AI-powered platform that ingests, transcribes and analyzes more than 70,000 podcast episodes every day, and that the Audiohook Podscan deal will make the majority of Podscan's podcast intelligence available to the industry at no cost.

The Audiohook Podscan deal closed on Aug. 24, according to the company, and Podscan founder Arvid Kahl has joined the company, where he will oversee the technical transition and the future development of the platform. The company says the combined data will give advertisers better information about where their money goes, and give publishers clearer visibility into how their content is categorized and evaluated. TV News Check, which covered the announcement, reported that most of the platform's intelligence will be free to use.

Under the Audiohook Podscan deal, creators, podcast networks and publishers can now access transcripts, brand-suitability analysis and contextual segments for the shows they represent without paying. Advertisers, meanwhile, can use Podscan to monitor when and where their brands are mentioned across podcast episodes, including the context and sentiment surrounding those mentions, also free of charge.

What podcast advertisers actually get

The core problem Podscan claims to solve is that podcast ad buying has mostly happened in the dark. The sheer volume of new episodes has historically made comprehensive analysis of the medium difficult, so brands have bought audiences from networks without really seeing what their ads ran beside. The Audiohook Podscan deal changes that calculation with free, episode-level transcripts and brand-suitability scores. It is also a useful addition to an industry that keeps winning: podcast advertising keeps beating streaming on sales lift, which makes better measurement tools worth having.

Advertisers have grown newly sensitive about the context their ads appear in, too. This week, Twitch creators pushed back after the platform's CEO acknowledged that AI now transcribes streams to flag channels that do not fit advertiser tastes (the backlash is here). The Audiohook Podscan deal hands advertisers a similar kind of visibility across podcasts, but with the twist that creators and networks get the same data, so the scoring happens in the open rather than inside a black box.

A break for independent shows

Podscan's founder says the sale is about speed. "Joining Audiohook gives us the resources and expertise to accelerate the roadmap, expand the platform's capabilities and build things that would have taken us much longer to accomplish independently," Kahl said in the announcement, as reported by PodcastingToday. Audiohook CEO Jordan Bentley framed the free tier as a way to strengthen the whole ecosystem: the more transparency brands, creators, networks and publishers have, the more confidently everyone can make decisions, he said.

For independent podcasters, that open access is the real story. Measurement tools like these have generally belonged to big buyers and networks, leaving smaller shows to pitch on downloads and gut instinct. Being able to pull transcripts and see exactly how a show is being categorized gives an indie host proof of value they could never afford before, in the same week transcription tech keeps getting cheaper (a new AI podcast studio for transcripts launched too). One more plain-language benefit: advertisers can now spot a genuine mention of their brand in an episode instead of guessing.

The timing says something about where the industry is headed. Podcast measurement has lagged behind the medium's growth for years: tens of thousands of new episodes land every week, and even big advertisers have struggled to say exactly which conversations their brands appeared next to. An AI platform that chews through that volume daily turns a guessing game into a searchable record, and handing the record out free pushes the advantage from whoever can afford the data to whoever has the best show.

The Audiohook Podscan deal is already live. Podscan by Audiohook is up now, and free accounts are available at podscan.fm. The announcement was carried by Podnews, which noted the company is making the bulk of its podcast intelligence data available to the industry at no charge: the full release is on Podnews, and TV News Check has its own writeup of the acquisition.
