Lionsgate put out the first official trailer for Above The Below this week, according to Hypebeast, and the pitch arrives fast: three astronauts who survived a disaster in space only to crash-land in the ocean. The survival thriller is co-directed by and stars Idris Elba alongside Martin Owen, and the Above The Below trailer sets up one of the starkest survival scenarios on this year's release calendar. The film reaches theaters on December 4.

The trailer sells the premise on a single question. "Can you face the improbability of your own survival?" iHorror reported that the line hangs over footage of the three crew members sealed inside their capsule on the ocean floor, and the Above The Below trailer keeps circling back to that question.

What the Above The Below trailer shows

ScreenRant described the opening beat of the Above The Below trailer: Elba's character, Jackson, is already inside the spacecraft with co-pilot Brooks as water rises around them. Brooks admits she is not sure she can carry out their escape plan. Jackson answers her with two words: "Just breathe."

The official synopsis, published by JoBlo, lays out the stakes in plain terms: after three astronauts survive a disaster in space, their unscheduled crash-landing traps them in the ocean depths with no contact with mission control and oxygen rapidly running out. The crew faces impossible choices as the air supply shrinks.

That is the film's whole hook. Three people, one sinking capsule, and a decision about who tries for the surface and who might get left behind. The Above The Below trailer keeps cutting back to the same image, rising water, dark corridors, and faces doing the math on how much air they have left.

The crew inside and behind the capsule

Elba directs with Owen and takes the lead role of Jackson, the mission commander. JoBlo reported the rest of the cast: Caitlin FitzGerald plays Brooks, the strong-willed co-pilot, while Hero Fiennes Tiffin plays Rhodes, an astronaut on his first mission. The screenplay comes from Elizabeth Morris, Matthew Mitchell, and Vicki Sargent, according to Hypebeast.

The production leaned hard on practical effects. Elba told Collider that the crew built the spacecraft, submerged it in water, and shot much of the film underwater, and he joked that he could hold his breath for four minutes, Hypebeast reported. The point of all that wet work was claustrophobia. Real water inside a real capsule reads on screen in a way a soundstage can only approximate, and the Above The Below trailer is clearly banking on that texture.

It is Elba's second feature as a director, following his 2018 debut Yardie. Blex Media noted the long gap and the timing: the film arrives while Elba remains one of the industry's most in-demand actors, after two of streaming's biggest 2025 releases in A House of Dynamite and Heads of State, and with 2026's Masters of the Universe among Prime Video's most-watched titles.

A crowded ocean of survival thrillers

Above The Below is diving into a genre with recent competition. Bloody Disgusting pointed to the lineage: Open Water and 47 Meters Down set the template years ago, and Whalefall, about a man swallowed by a whale, arrived earlier this month. The new film's twist is the premise itself. Astronauts train for the vacuum of space, and the Above The Below trailer asks what happens when their training meets the one environment their spacecraft was never meant to land in.

That reversal gives the film its edge. Most aquatic thrillers are about people who chose to be in the water. This crew did not choose the ocean, which makes every decision in the trailer land harder. The film is currently listed as a limited theatrical release, according to iHorror, which cited The Playlist's listings.

The Above The Below trailer is out now, according to Hypebeast, and JoBlo has the full trailer breakdown with the official synopsis. The film opens in theaters on December 4. For more screen news, check our coverage of the Bunker trailer and the Glee reboot.
